before goin to the garage, pull out your Ht leads and and unscrew the camshaft cover and have a look inside it for a kinda mustard coloured gunge, and the inside of the coolant bootle, and a sweet nasty smell around the block, any of those symptons and its a head gasket buddy, also you will defenetly need to get the cylinder head skimmed by 3/4 thousandth of an inch in case its slightly warped. also check water pump. worth while changing the thermostat, the gauge on the dash may be saying the temp is fine, when actually the stat is stuck hope that helps!

My nissan B13 used to have this problem...

after going through some experiences which are costly..this is my advice

a) Open the engine oil srew cover and turn it over and check for green/yellow slugde/cream (as recommended by UK-p11gt). If the cream appear...well thats it..water is leaking into the engine...

Do it while it is cold (b4 start engine and also after 10 -15 minutes use).

If these 2 does not produce cream....u are safe..

b) IF NO cream detected..

possible problems

1) your radiator is blocked or leaking - change it - dont even think of unclogging it.2) water is leaking from your water pump - cracked? or seal leak?3) water is leaking from your connecting tubes. - small leaks?

It is really very tedious because it requires elimination process.

However, there is one way to make things easy.Buy some non-corrosive water soluble flourescent dye (bright green or yellow). Pour it in your water reservoir...Run it for 1 or 2 days.

Put your car under a shade...take a hand-torch...and do a visual check along the water related path like tubes/ pump. The dye will appear from the leak. ...(anyway only come to this solution if you find that there are no cream under your oil cover)

good luck
