After my pit-stop at mcd's today i was reversing out of the stall and noticed a lovely puddle of bright green. I took a peek underneath and saw a nice steady stream of coolant flowing to the ground. i got it home and took a closer look. the hoses seem to be ok. i dried everything up, topped up the coolant and turned the motor on. i took another look and the dripping is coming from the area where all the pulleys are located on the front of the motor. i can't see any hoses in that area. is there something i could be missing? or could it be a gasket in behind there that needs replacing? here's a pic. any help is appreciated. thanks!

If all the hoses are ok, then it is the 'puke hole' in the waterpump.

thanks for the reply, would that likely indicate a problem with the water pump itself or a "clog" somewhere forcing the coolant out of the puke hole?

This would indicate that the shaft seal on the waterpump has failed, and you need to replace the pump. Might as well do the Timing belt too while you are there...

either the pump has failed or it could be the small rubber hose known as "bypass hose" it is above those pulleys and kinda behind them. its like 2" long. its often overlooked when random mechanics do maintenance on these vehicles.

+1

That's why I said 'if all the hoses are ok' You can see this hose from the top if you look carefully at the front of the engine above the waterpump.

Ok, so i looked a little more thoroughly this evening. it does in fact seem to be coming from a hose at the top front of the engine in the area behind the pulleys. from what i can gather, this must be the bypass hose. so now that i see where it's coming from, getting to it is another story.........anyone have a detailed how-to with pics?? i've changed many hoses before but all the stuff in front of the hose is what i'm concerned about.

here's a pic i found online. very far right, middle of the pic, black hose. thats where the leak seems to be coming from.

I'm having the same problem (QX4 1997)... is there any procedures on how to repair this hose?... I've checked the FSM with no luck finding information.... Thanks
