Hey Guys...hope you don't mind me dropping in every now and then to see how things are going. We recently did a cool cheap mod to my 69 vette that can be done to any car. I picked up a "rolling code" HomeLink unit off eBay for $25 and we installed it in the vettes header bar next to the windsheild as it is a tiny unit. It has just one power & ground lead wire and remembers the codes even if your battery is disconnected and also very simple to program. Now I don't have to hunt around for the garage door remote any more. Just thought I would share this with you guys if you are looking for a cheap easy 1 hour mod that will make coming home easier not having to search for the remote.

Cheers...Rob

Rob, good to hear from you. I was in Miami Beach on Thanksgiving weekend for my mom's 75 birthday. I stayed in Bal Harbor. I wish I had time. I should have looked you up. Yea, I've always been trying to find a way to get one in the Q. I have 2 remotes in my car for my house and my mom's house. It takes up room in my door's map pocket. My wife's Bimmer has the homelink and it's great. I recomend anyone who has a new car to get one. I'll look on ebay and see where I can fit one in the Q. Show a pic of yours.

Rob... could you please link me for the product you bought on eBay.

And... any chance I could convince you to do a write up of how you performed the installation? I'd like to make an article out of it for all of NICO to take advantage of.

here is the link

you can get them for around $25 and make sure you get a rolling code version which has the small lighted "triangle shapped" light in the middle just above the center button. The "round/oval" shaped light is not the rolling code. All you do is hook up 1 power wire (you can put an inline fuse if you wish like 10amp) and then the ground wire. Afterwards you are all set and you can mount it anywhere you like. I cut out a section of my header along the windsheild and installed it there. Very very simple and really no need for a write-up. To program just go to HomeLink website and look up universal roaming code programing instructions...just about all the cars are the same. My Nissan Titan works the same as my Dad's Caddy that works the same as my Mom's Lexus.

Cheers...Rob

btw....Louiegz. I live at 67th & Collins which is 5 min from BalHarbor, LOL!!! Too bad we could have not met up. Next time hit me up and we go for a spin in the vette along with a drink. And yes...I drive the vette 90% of the time having put over 15,000 miles on it since Oct. 05 when it arrived and half the time it was in the shop getting the 6 speed conversion done along with several other nice mods. My Titan which is exactly 11 months old only has 4,000 miles.

This will work with any garage door opener? Or, do you need a homelink system installed on your house?

the 97 has those built into the visor, but its not a rolling code, so mine is use less. Is there a way to switch it to a rolling code? has anyone done this? How hard would it be to revove the current one in the visor, and switch it? Any ideas?

Thanks

got to this site...

http://www.homelink.com/training/video.tml

you don't need HomeLink installed in your house. HomeLink is what you are installing in your car and all it does is the capability to learn countless remote garage door frequency codes so you don't have to carry around a remote anymore. The unit is really flat (like less than 1" tall) so I would think that you should be able to install this in your headliner, etc.

Nice mod! I considered doing this, and then found the perfect mounting spot for my Genie opener... clipped to the fuse panel cover! No more fumbling for it in the door pocket or knocking it off with my leg when I get out of the car. If you tighten the clip a little it won't even move around. Still might go for the homelink though when I have more time to play...

Here are a couple of pictures of what I was talking about... and I tossed one in of my GPS too. It's a Pioneer AVICS1, and I love it! I still want to upgrade to a new head unit at some point - but for the price you can't beat this... plus it acts as a Bluetooth speaker phone too!

The GPS unit goes inside with me... it has rechargable batteries that last for about 2 hours, so I plug it in at night.

The 97, or at least my 97 doesn't do rolling code- its is a little older than rolling code technology... i have tried numerous times, and had numerous friends try also...

I have a 97Q45 with the homelink also in the visor. It took me maybe 30 diffrent try's to program my door but I got it to finnally work.

Also note I have a very old garage door im talking maybe 15-20 years old. It was on the house when I moved in when I was 4yrs old and now Im 20yrs old.

But my homelink system works perfect and now I have mastered programing it and have been able to program all the buttons to diffrent doors.

The 2000 is, probably the 1999 one also.

It is convenient.

Maybe you can give me some pointers then. I just bought my 97 Q45 and for some reason can't get the homelink to program. Half the time it just never takes the code and the other half it takes the code but never works on the garage door.

I know it says something like when the red light blinks rapidly it has excepted the code. but thats a lie I tryed to it without any door opener and it still blinked really fast. well to do it you have to have a really strong finger and wrist. The first time I did it I repeated the code install for all 3 buttons just incase the 1st or the 2nd didnt get it the 3rd one hopefully did. it helps if you unplug your garage door before you do this. the only real trick to it is to hold the garage door as close to the homelink systems as you can and try to cover up as little a space on the homelink as possible. now the HARD PART you have to press the garage door button repedeatly as fast as possible threwout the whole process.click.click.click.click non-stop and all the way untill the very last process where the light blinks extremly fast and then some. keep holding and clicking for another 30 secs. repeat this for all 3 buttons while resting your wrist in between buttonsthen plug garage door back in and test away Im physically fit and this still proved to be a strain ... so good luck.
