Overview:
Swapping from a tired SOHC engine to the twin cam version is gaining popularity as our cars are getting older and racking up miles. As the SOHC tach reads a different signal from the DOHC version, many people try to find and swap in the newer tachometer or complete cluster. Neverlift may have just found a simpler and cheaper solution for you...
Difficulty: ***
Time: 1 hour
Cost: <$5
Tools:
- Phillips head screwdriver- Wire tools (cutting, stripping, crimping)- Ratchet and extensions.
Materials:
- Wire connectors - Electrical tape
Procedure:
Remove the cluster using your preferred method. Depending on your level of skill/laziness, you may be removing kick panels, but dropping the steering column is necessary.
With the cluster removed, flip it over and locate the TAM and its wire (yellow w. red stripe).
Cut the TAM wire, please use common sense and leave yourself some room to work on both sides:
Run a single wire from the cabin to the engine bay, near your coil(ignition coil). Go ahead and attach this to the plug side of the TAM wire.
Cut or strip coil positive wire, and solder/butt connect in the wire you ran from cabin.
Shroud/protect your wire from heat/moving objects. Test out the tach works, then put your car back together.
