has it/can it be done? thinking of doing a newer nissan motor swap and the obvious clearance issue with the steering box could be solved with a manual rack, however, i wouldn't even know where to start...anyone have any info?

A friend of mine put a s13 rack into his 70 510 coupe.Lots of fab work involved.

I'd assume the s130 rack would be a really close to bolt in fit. But I couldn't tell ya, I don't even have rack and pinion steering

yes...people have used the S130 240Z rack before....but theres not much to gain out of it, considering the custom work involved....along with the fact that you can't lower your 510 very much using the 240Z rack ( for some reason I don't know ).Go to http://www.datsuns.com......there is a how-to article on there for the 240Z rack into 510 conversion

S130 is a 79-83 280ZX which steers from the rear fo the front axle, the S30 is a 70-78 240z,260z,280z, they use the rack that steers from the front of the front axle

some of the early S130's actually used a steering box, most of the later models used power rack and pinion, and a very few early cars used a manual rack

EvilD is rightS130s with manual racks are hard to find my ZXR is equiped with one and the only other ones I've actually seen where supposedly former ZXRs aswell aside from the 1 or 2 that'll pop up on Ebay.

The S130 is slightly wider than the S30 so consider that before you rush out and get a rack that might not fit.

as for the S130 with a steering box, I've currently got the entire assembly sittin out in the garage if anyone is interested, it came out of an 80 that we did a standard power rack swapover on.
