Hey guys, my cop setup is getting kinda worn, I'm contemplating switching to coil packs. I remember seeing a post about converting to GM coils a while ago but I searched and can't seem to find it. I got some questions regarding the conversion though.

1) What car did you guys source your coil packs from (I'd like to be able to get them locally and not have to order any online)?

2) Am I going to have to convert to standalone? (I've seen guys run gm 3800 coilpacks and dodge neon coilpacks because aparently the resistances are similar or something but I'm not sure)

3) How hard is the wiring? Diagrams/Posts availible for them?

Thanks.

I personally like the Neon coilpacks. They're pretty compact, and if you want to upgrade, MSD makes a high output replacement coil pack. If mine ever crap out or aren't able to support my HP, I plan on using the MSD Neon coil packs. IDK about their resistance though. You would also need to get your hands on the wiring harness as well.

As for wiring and diagrams, I'm not sure. I'd have to do some research and see if I could find diagrams for the neon coils. Regardless, coil's aren't a complicated device and it should be pretty straight forward.

So did you change your ecu at all, or are you already running stand-alone?

usually your normal 4 tower coil pack has 3 wires. The Neon and Ford coils do. The Ford coil packs have already been put past 1000whp and past 17,000 rpms, I believe similar test have been done on the Neon pack as well.

The 3 wires are Coil 1, Power, Coil 2

Coil 1: will need to be wired up with Cylinder 1 and 4 coil plug signal wires,

Power: I'm pretty sure the CA COP has a power wire you could trace is back to 1 power wire on the harness and splice it to the coil pack or connect all four into 1.

Coil 2: will be the cylinder 2 and 3 COP signal wires.

I believe the CA COP has a ground on each, if using a FORD you can ground them on the coil pack as it has a Metal plate on both ends that act as a ground. For Neon I'm not sure if similar but you can ground it on the engine.

DO NOT USE THE MSD COILS FOR NEONS!!!(the stock ones work great thou..)

first hand experience. all SRT owners thought these were good and the ended up being crap. the back side of the coil will end up with a tree formation crack on the back. at least this has happened with all the SRT guys, and if it hasn't happened yet believe me it will. its just a waste of money and there are 600hp SRT's out there with the stock coil and no issues.

just something to concider

i also am running a standalone with a Ford EDIS setup using the neon coil packs.

the srt4 guys could be having that problem from the heat of the turbo being only inches from the back of the coils. i dropped one and it broke as soon as it hit the ground, whooops...

the resistance is about the same as the stockers, but i dont know about the dwell settings.

you are probelly right on queue with it being too hot. if you locate it to a different part of the engine where its not as hot then it will probelly be ALOT better for it. but even with it installed, most didn't notice a difference
