Hello boys and girls, I have a Turbonetics T3/T4 turbo that i want converted from external wastegate setup to an internal wastegate.

The reason is i want to keep it simple. Im not going to boost much over 8 psi for at least a year at which time i can always go external if need be.

A friend of mine says it just bolts up, but i dont see how thats possible.

external to internal? are you serious?

Internal gates (like the name implies) are built into the turbo, unless the turbo came stock with one you will need a whole new turbo with one built in. Even if you were able to get one built in, you would need to buy a wastegate actuator and attach it to the turbo itself with it's non-existant mounting points (since it wasn't built for one)

External gates are better performance wise and only consist of attaching it to the exhaust manifold (there should already be a flange) and I believe attaching 2 vacuum hoses. That's it.

There really is no reason in the world that I can think of to convert to internal, ESPECIALLY if you already have an external gate.

Think i answered my own question. Looks like i can just bolt this here plate on which will allow for internal wastegate, but i'll just need a 3 bolt flange for the downpipe instead of a 5 bolt :)

You didnt read what he said i guess...unless your housing is already built for internal wastegate it wont work, youre talking about bolting the actuator on, but the turbo still wont even have the internal wastegate...just an actuator bolted onto it.

maybe i am confused. If i were to bolt the 5-bolt plate (19) to the turbo (the actuator rod (5) is connected to a perpendicular arm which acts as a valve on the small hole next to the exhaust wheel hole which would cause excess boost to go through the downpipe, and the actuator valve would read vaccum from the vaccum fitting on the compressor side.

The valve im talking about is the round thing that you can see in the 5 bolt plate.

maybe i should have mentioed before, i have a small hole next to the exhaust wheel hole. maybe that caused all the confusion :)

so youre saying you have an internally wastegated turbo you just dont have an actuator on it?

If he did already have an internally gated one than it would have to be welded shut in order for the external gate to function in the first place. So if he already has everyhting but the actuator, then yes, he only has to add the actuator and clear the internal gate for it to work. Otherwise see my first post.

i got the turbo used. it was from a kit, it also came with an external wastegate which I used and it worked as expected.

The DP flange (5 bolt) just covered up the extra hole which i think would normally be used by an internal wastegate. I would try and take some pics of the turbo, but my server is goofed up at the moment

There shouldn't be a hole normally, so it would seem you already do have an internal sealed gate. Just get the actuator and clear the weld around the flapper door.
