as for as i know, ASC has done the convertible conversion for all Nissan US convertibles. I can't remember the name of the Japanese maker that did Nissan Japan's conversion off hand.
The reason why manufacturers contract out convertibles is cost. In Nissan's case, it's cheaper to contract the work out than to build machinery at the factory for the tops. Especially on the limited edition runs like the S13 and Z32 were. I don't know if ASC is handling the new 350Z Roadster or not. Since it came out so early in the new Z's chassis run, I would almost be tempted to say that Nissan is doing that one in house.
And to say that Nissan simply hands a car over to the contractor is understating Nissan's part in the deal. Nissan installs a whole lot of structural supports before sending it to ASC, then ASC adds a few more supports before final assembly. I have a thread in the convertible section with all of the support locations. Each page says whether or not ASC or Nissan installed it.
