Newbie here: I have a 2002 Pathfinder SE and w/ 44700miles. I'm looking to eventually convert to a full synthetic, either Amsoil or Mobil. I'm curious if anyone flushed their engine prior to conversion. I'm a little nervous about flushing due to leaks occuring afterwards b/c that happened to me on my previous vehicle, albeit it was a 96 Sebring. I've been current on all my oil changes so I don't "think" I need to flush. Thoughts?

Also, what fuel additives have you guys used in cleaning the injectors?

Thanks....

Most people dont experience leaks anymore.

When they do happen they are generally due to a different mechanism:

A new different oil mwith different detergentsm often gets rid of some sludge, which may have assisted in sealing potentially leaking gaskets ( sludge otherwise is a very bad thing of course)

Switching to a new oil with possibly higher detergency, could produce this effect regardless of syn or not. This is a rest risk we cannot remove, if you switch to an entirely differnt line of oils (dinos are getting more and more similiar to each otehr)

So I cant promise you , you wont see leaking, but if you do, its for a differnt reason and it also means, you are dissolving depostis were you<need> them disssolved also.

Syns are geranlly safe to switch, I switched them and again with high miles vehicles (and no flush) with no leaking at all.

But then again all those vehciels were in pretty clean internally.

In summary:

Dont flush ( can cause its own problems if not done correctly) and just switch.

Fuel cleaners:

Choice 1: BG44k , generally can only be bought at stores powerful, works well, if used as directedChoice # 2 Chevron techron injector cleaner:Same active ingredient as BG44k only a lot less, so less care needs to be taken in its use .

Follow directions to the letter in both cases.

Thanks Fred, I appreciate the info. My engine is pretty clean so I probably won't be so concerned if I switch. If I get nervous, I'll do a blend.

Edit;

post above on BG44k should read.."can generally only be bought at garages/shops not typically at auto parts stores"

I am also thinking about using the Amsoil XL-5W-20 Synthetic Oill. Because my 02 Honda Odyssey is require 5W-20, so I don't have to buy two types of motor oil in the garage. I also have a 2001 QX4, can I use the Amsoil 5w-20?

Thanks,
