Consumer Reports just published its annual auto issue, Nissan's did pretty well.

Recommended Nissans:350z, Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, QuestRecommended Infinit's:FX, G35, and I35

Sentra tested well, but did not get recommended due to declining reliabilityMurano also tested well, but a steering defect kept them from recommending it.

CU didn't care much for the Frontier or Xterra. The Titan, and Armada/QX45 and M45 were too new.

Surprisingly they said they were disappointed with the Q45 despite a top rating on reliability.

Hmmmm.

Hell yeah!! Now I just want the Titan and Armada/QX56 to steal some of the Tundra's and Sequoia's glory.

I havent seen the new issue, but I heard that American cars (as a group) were rated more "reliable" than Euro cars for the 1st time. This is kinda misleading cause American cars may be better in the short term, but over a longer period the Euros are still better. And when your BMW 745 has a problem, its usually with the complex electronic systems. When you Cavalier goes down, it tends to be something more major (powertrain, suspension, etc)

My aunt finally decided to get rid of her old 80's Benz. She's looking at the Altima or Maxima...

You're correct. the German makes tested very well, but only one German car was recommended : The Bimmer 3 series. That's it.And most of the German makes had below average reliability.

American cars did do a little better but are they're clearly still way behind the Japanese. Each American make had a couple of models recommended, but far more models were not recommended than recommended. Caddy rolled a gutterball (zero recommended). For some perspective:The entire toyota/Lexus product line was recommended except one - the Tacoma short bed, (which is rollover prone). But the Tacoma crew cab version was recommended. Interesting issue.

I get to read a book over spring break about how the Japanese dominated us in productivity in the 70s and 80s and may still (dont know?)

Its called Theory Z

Its interesting though how many of the Japanese mfgs are moving there design and manufacturing facilities over to North America.

Yeah but Japanese production sucks now and will until Koizumi can get all the corruption out of the Iron Triangle.
