consult cables

does anyone know if you can just plug in a straight wire no circuit board or circuit protection consult cable into the consult port and a laptop without it harming anything? found a nice y splitter cable on ebay that has a consult plug and a obd2 plug and would like to get it so I can do things with later model cars.

I'm not really sure what all a consult cable has in with it in order to read the ECU. Maybe take a look at the FSM to see what the outputs are, and if the voltage/amperage would damage whatever you're plugging it in to.
