My family is looking to purchase a 2011+ QX56 or QX80. After doing a little bit of research I am starting to get a little afraid of the qx56 timing chain problems and catalic converter problems. It looks like Infiniti issued a recall for the timing chain issue, however is this still active and would it cover a second owner or anyone who did not purchase it new? The cataylic converter does not scare my so much as it seems like something I could do myself if it comes up. Any other common issues I should be looking for? Thanks in advanced!

Hey JPJ, welcome aboard!
Recall will apply to subsequent owners. I wouldn't shy away from a 11-14 (or so) QX56 necessarily... I have a 12 Titan (same drivetrain) and don't recall a TC recall (but it may have been done before I bought it). Solid drivetrain, thirsty on gas...

I know very little about the QX80, but it seems most owners here are happy with theirs.

We own a 2011 QX56 and have absolutely loved it in every way. We have 150K miles now and counting. The more miles you have the more likely you will need to have things fixed. We haven't had any issues with the timing chain or the catalytic converter.

I have a 2011 QX56 and will never own one again. The rear air leveling system is complete garbage, and I’d argue dangerous. Nissan should eliminate the system. I’m sure the QX80 system is the same design and will suffer all the same problems.

My good friend has a 14' that has been a nightmare. After having issues and replacing all coil packs and right side catts he now has fully failiing tranny, he's unloading a 78k car from 5 years ago for 13.5k at Car max to avoid a 10.5k tranny replacement.

I am a fan-boy for Nissan/Infiniti but man this was a big failure and the factory told him to pound sand.

I've had all both the timing chain and cat issues on my 2012. 10K worth of repairs around 80K. Recall window is now over and Infiniti consumer affairs was really bad on what I consider a significant safety issue.
