I've been looking into getting an exhaust for my coupe.

I was previously looking into a nismo but there is no longer an option for it on the nissan site for the 3.5L.(Not sure whats up with that?) So im now considering a borla. I went on the site and found the exhaust for the 3.5 coupes it was a rear stainless steel section (I'm guessing this means Axle-Back). I'm not an expert on exhausts but is their a difference in sounds between this and say a cat-back?

Also, i've seen alot of mention of y-pipes from searches i've done here on the forums, is this something you buy seperately or is it supposed to come with the exhaust system? Sorry i tried doing research but i couldnt find all the answers i needed and the Borla system in expensive so i want to make sure i have all the facts before i start throwing all that money around.

Not sure if axle/catback make different sounds, I'm also interested.

Ypipes do come separately though. I think cat backs come with a mid pipe and the y pipe replaces the midpipe

The Racingline Y pipe which you are refering to above replaces the stock Y pipe. It simply is built differently to allow more air flow. A less drastic bend at the downpipe, eliminates the 3rd cat converter, and also eliminates a crimp. If you are buying a cat back system for our car, it is going to start at the end of the stock y pipe.
The Borla exhaust is an axle back. You cant really compare axle back to cat back as far as sound is concerned. By this I mean each specific systems (brand) muffler is going to sound different if its in a cat back application with more stock pipe replaced or in an axle back with less stock pipe replaced. For example, the Borla doesnt come in a cat back. If you were to throw it on a bone stock coupe, its going to sound differently than a coupe with the midpipe replaced for larger pipe. If you were to throw it on a coupe with the Y Pipe replaced its going to sound different still.
Essentially the question you are asking is what each brands muffler sounds like. The only thing that differentiates is what they include in their specific kit, pipes from the cat back or pipes from the axle back. If you buy the axle back Borla you can always replace the mid pipe and the Y pipe afterwards giving you custom exhaust all the way to your down pipe.
Dig?

EDIT: Just thought of one more thing while I was outside smoking. Most (not all) cat back systems will include a resonator which is again going to alter the sound. Your best bet is to go on Youtube, search for your car with whatever exhaust you are considering, and spend a few hours listening.
