I have had my 90' NA 300zx for many years now, and in that ime I have replaced all engine accessories, radiator, hood, front fenders, back hatch, rear shocks, drive shaft (twice), transmission, and engine. So I do have some decent mechanical background on my car.

But now I am considering moving into uncharted territory and I need some advice from the masters. I want to twin turbo a VQ35HR and put that into my 300. Fitting a square peg into a round hole is something I have never done before, but the big thing is the turbo charging. I know it cant be as simple as buying the kit and bolting it all on. I know the principal function of a turbocharger. But I need to learn the nitty-gritty: What kind of fuel system does it require? how do you tune the engine to match the boost pressure? Do you need an "engine management" system and what is it? What IS a turbo timer?
I need someone to tell me if this swap is a good idea in the first place and if so, point me in the right direction. The very first investment has to be knowledge. Where can I go to learn all there is about turbocharging and tunning an engine?

I'll take the easy one here. You don't have to have a turbo timer if you have turbos. A turbo timer's function is to hold the car on for a period of time after you've removed the key. The purpose of this is that heat kills turbos. Allowing the car to idle for a minute or two after driving helps move some of that heat out, instead of just shutting the car off and letting it sit. You can choose a fixed time yourself, or a full auto one looks at engine temp and how hard you've been driving it to pick out a time. They may also throw in some other features. My Blitz will give you a voltage and engine temp reading, and it will do lap timings.

You may have meant to ask about Electronic Boost Controllers. These are more relevant. Again, not required, but useful. They aren't just for the guys that want to tinker with settings all the time. As your turbo builds pressure the waste gate begins to slowly open before it gets to its actual set point. For instance, on the the stock 300zx turbos, that is ~6-7PSI. As it slowly opens, you're losing that pressure, aka free power. The boost controller controls the pressure the wastegate sees, and allows you to control when it allows that pressure to go through. This way you can block all pressure up until a point, then open it up, rather than having it slowly bleed out.

Really, I had just heard the term "turbo timer" and had no idea what it was. But anyway, Individual help is welcome here too, But I want toknow if there is a kind of "all things turbo" source that I can go to learn everything I need to know about proper turbocharging?
