I'm gonna look at a very cheap '96 I30 5 speed tomorrow, white and 109k for 3,999. If its in nice shape i'l get it for a daily driver, i'm wondering if theres anything to watch out for with this year? From what i understand its pretty much rock solid reliable.

Next question, in the future, if a VQ35 engine should happen to find its way into my possesion is it an easy swap? Gotta get all the use i can outta that engine hoist i bought :)

Wow, nice price! Any records? I'll let the Maxima/I30 crowd chime in on this one...

Is the Maxima/I30 5-spd considered a "short throw"? Last 5-spd cars I've driven were a Miata and 95 Mazda 626. They had that slick "snickety" feel.

I had a 95 maxima 5 spd. which is a very similar car mechanically. It was very fast and a blast to drive. It was almost impossible to drive with restraint because of the terrific high revving engine well mated to the 5 spd. However, it is not a short throw transmission, although not really long either.

The engines, if maintained, are virtually indestructible. However, transmission bearings are a very common problem around the mileage you are considering. There is a problem involving shimming, if I recall, that cost me about $700 to fix; replacing the clutch with German clutch called Sachs, I think, at the same time brought the total to about $1100. Whining in first and second gears were one symptom of this problem. (If you replace the cluth, do not use the cheap Nissan clutch kit.)

I drove mine until 137,000 miles last December when it was traded in for a 97 Q45t. However, many are driven well over 200,000 miles. See Maxima.org for more information.

The Maxima/I30 is much lighter and thus may feel more agile than the FY33 Q. However, the beam rear axle is not ideal, and the suspension in general seems to have limited travel. If one were to nit pick, one could say that the pitching, and vibration of the suspension on very rough urban roads can be tiresome.

All in all though, they are geat cars and a lot of fun to drive. The automatics feel heavier and more ponderous though, so if you like a manual transmission, it would probably be the better choice. I got tired of driving the manual in congested urban traffic, otherwise I probably would have kept mine.

Thanks for the info man. I currently have two Nissan 240sx for sport/modding purposes. (selling one soon) My goal with the I30 is for it to be a very economical daily driver while still having the great VQ power and roomy comfort. I'l leave it stock and treat it well.

I love 5 speed, there are moments when i wished i had an automatic but those are few and quickly forgotten. Gonna go check this I30 out on Monday i'l let ya know.
