I go two weeks or more before I drive my 94 Q. It is basically a sunday car for me. The question I have is: I usually connect my battery charger up a day before I know Iam going to drive it, so the alternator doesn't have to work so hard. The direction say if you have a negative grounded car (which I am guessing I have), then connect the negative end to a metal spot on the car, then connect the other cable to the positive terminal on the battery. I am not sure where I am connecting it is correct because even though the charger is supposed to quit charging and a green light is suppose to light up when it is fully charged, it never does. The battery is new, the charger is new. Any recomendations?? Wayne

Where I connect it is on the metal part of the fender lip.

if the battery's new and you're in well ventilated area I would just attach both ends of the charger to the battery.

The reason to avoid creating sparks around batteries, is some batteries emit a small amount of hydrogen when charging which could potentially explode and potentially blind you with battery acid. I think this happens about once every 16 years to somebody in an airtight garage. Of course I'm not recommending you not follow the instructions, but I never do.

If your charger has a amp gauage watch it, the charger should trickle charge less than 2 amps when the battery is full.

Of course the Q has a 110 AMP alternator and can quickly charge a battery without breaking a sweat. Unless you're having a problem already with the battery or alternator, this really isn't necessary.

forecast is abolutely right - the idea was to attach the connector to the battery first and then the other connector to the car body elsewhere, so that resulting sparks would be far away from the hydrogen near the battery.

In modern sealed batteries, this is far less of an issue. Attaching directly to the battery terminals is fine - just do one connector at the battery first (keeping the other side carefully separated!). Remove from the non-battery connector first too. FWIW, with all the electronics in cars nowadays, I kinda feel that using the battery terminals directly is better - less current and spikes wandering around elsewhere. I acknowledge that this is a minor point, though.

If you do decide to attach elsewhere, do use someplace where current can flow properly (no paint, solid metal, etc.)

Of course, with chargers, the wires are usually wired in. So, you just have to attach the battery end only.

If your car is in a garage, you might use a float charger like this. It just keeps it topped off rather than letting it cycle deeper. I've been using one on "Q2" during her long stay in the garage...

Ditto on the float charger, Harbor Frieght has some nice cheap floats that you can leave permenently connected to the battery posts with a quick connect/disconnect for driving.

They go on sale for 10 bucks every few months.
