I put in a no name brand cone filter onto my stock intake on my s13. Now the engine idles worse then it did before and cold idle isn't as high as it used to be. The car had a slight idle problem before I put on the filter.

Is the cone filter messing up the MAF reading, swirling the air? Is there something I have to reset? Thanks guys.

Did you disconnect the battery when you installed the cone filter? I know that was part of the instructions when I replaced mine w/ a CAI. Maybe that will reset the ecu and maf sensor.

Also, If you were messing around in that area, you might have knocked the MAF sensor loose or may have gotten it dirty if you touched it.

Check the connection to the MAF, disconnect the battery for a while, say 30 minutes, start it up again, and see how it runs.

My friend runs no name filters, they work fine.

However one warning: if your has a plastic "head/cap", watch out, my friend's mysteriously disappeared somewhere after he checked the filter again from revving hard and poor cone construction.

Yeah, the battery was disconnected since I was also re-sealing the oil pan and had to work with tools near the starter. After two big sparks when my wrench extension nicked the starter, I decided it would be a good idea to disconnect it. Is there any other way to "reset" the ecu or something?

The car seems to be running better then it was when I first started it up. Maybe the ecu is "learning".

Check to see what your ecu codes spit:

http://www.240sx.org/faq/articles/ecmcodes.htm

other ecu stuff is available on the 240sx.org faq section.

It could be learning, but I'm not too sure how long a prob like that will last since mine worked right away.

Good luck

Wouldn't my check engine light be on if my ECU had trouble codes?

O, I thought your ECU light went on, hence trying to reset the ecu.

Only times I had bad idle when installing new stuff was when the light went on.

However, there's techniques to reset ecu on teh 240sx.org site if you look under the ECM section.

If your maf sensor was reading bad, it should also throw an ecu code.

So, if it's idling bad and all you did was put in a cone filter, w/ no codes being thrown afterwards, I'm kinda lost.

Try putting the original back in and see what happens.

when you reset the ecu, all your doing is erasing the learned fuel trim.

the ecu does not need to be reset to "learn" about the new filter. the ecu will make any minor adjustments on its own.

resetting after an intake or exhaust mod is really a myth perpetuated by people that dont understand how the ecu works.

the ecu doesnt know nor care that you changed anything. all its worried about is if its injecting the proper amount of fuel, and that all the sensors are in range.

its not bad to reset the ecu, but the ecu will adjust to the changes if its reset or not.

a reset is most beneficial if a sensor is starting to drift. the reset will bring the ecu back to base values, and make the car feel better. until the wandering sensor throws off the settings again.
