I was thinking of buying a cone filter adapter to replace the air box on my 1990 240sx

Would it be best just to keep the stock air box or does a cone filter get the job done better?

Thanks

more filter surface area....better flow, kinda, your still restricted by the throttle body more than any other component, basically.....just more noise, that will really be your only benefit

Keep the stock air box. Replace the stock intake pipe instead. The stock one is not every good on flow.

i was mistaken, after looking there appears to be a bend in the DE pipe that is NOT int the SOHC pipe, it may work, but i may have been mistaken

IMO just get a maf adapter anf pop a AEM dry flo filter on it

Stock pipe works better then metal pipes.

To OP, Replace the box with a maf adapter and fliter if you want more noise and maybe 3hp. If not just slap in a new OEM filter.

I drove around with a cone filter for over a year and when I switched back to the stock air box, the throttle response was a lot better. You're better off keeping the stock air box and like everyone said, throw an OEM or K&N replacement filter in there.

the KA sounds pretty nice with an intake on it, that's about it. lol

I am running a K&N in a gutted stock box. Can't really tell one way or the other in regards to any performance gains. The biggest problem that I do have however is that small section of tubing that connects the throttle body to the main intake pipe is cracked all to hell and back. For that reason and that reason alone am I looking into an aluminum pipe.

Shorter pipe, colder air...what else do you need. Better than any Aftermarket intake or stock any day.

oem pipe is better at keeping the air cooler then metal.

actually the thing about metal pipes is they resist temp changes more then plastic so yes the outside gets hot but inside the pipe it is still cool.

Only when the throttle plate is kept closed, such as a looooooong stop at idle will the metal pipe affect inlet air temperatures. The metal pipe would have to be a lot hotter than it gets in the average engine bay on a hot summer day to affect inlet air temperatures. While driving, the air flows through the piping too fast to be affected by the surface temperatures of the tubing. SCC did a test on these claims many years ago. I also remember reading a couple of other articles dispelling this myth. But, that was a few years ago.Google is your friend.

alright i'm kinda of leaning going toward the metal pipe, and drop in k&n filter.

My only question is whether a 91-98 240sx intake pipe will work in a 89-90 240sx.

The S14 cold air intakes you see on EBay are shaped more similarly to the 89/90 intakes. However you still may have to cut and twist one end a little bit if dealing with the KA E engine.I will be ordering one up maybe tomorrow, should get it hopefully before the end of the week.

i have a greddy/trust filter used it for like a week sounded nice and acceleration was better until the engine bay warmed up when it was sucking up warm air from the engine bay which made the car slower so i switched back to stock i have it in the garage somewhere might use it again one day and make a panel like the k&n ones

stock intake box w/ k&n drop in is good...especially if u dont have the after market intake yet...i used both...there is no difference in power (atleast noticable) but k&n or cone filter will give u better gas millage...i will put money on that...aluminum piping or stock piping is the same...if u want to disperse the heat from it ( which is not that much in the 1st place...take out all the lining and stuff on the hood and engine bay...run w/out fan shroud and fan clutch...then spray ur pipe w/ high temp paint...other things to do is take off the resonator pipe at the end of the box...and the big black box in front of ur wheel behind the wheel well cover...then cut a big hole in the front of the air box (the filter will get dirty faster this way though) but that's as much as u can do for a stock KA to maximize efficiency
