I am a relatively new owner to the G37S & the manual shifting in drive sport mode with the automatic transmission. With the power in the G37 engine, it revs so fast that I slightly went into the redline a couple of times in drive sport manual 1. My biggest concern is damaging the engine, particular long term and obviously preventing this from happening. Seeing this is different than shifting with a regular manual transmission, does anybody have a suggestion on how to shift as to not let it go into redline again?

Welcome to NICO! I had a 2009 G37S...here's my take. The paddles are great for track days when you want the car to stay in gear, not for everyday driving. The Auto when in Drive Sport mode, will shift faster than you can with the paddles. As for the redline worries, the car is designed to go into the red, then the computer backs it off by killing the fuel...you cant hurt it. The valvetrain can take more punishment than you can dish out, believe me. The only thing that could damage the car is not changing the oil.

Most cars these days are designed to keep the average idiot (or the above average heavy footed human in our case :chuckle: ) from hurting them. The ECU will cut power when you get about 1/10 of the way into the red to prevent damage to the engine. I wouldn't recommend driving down the freeway bouncing off the rev limiter, but what you are describing will do no harm.

Have fun with the spirited (but safe) driving!

There's also a speed governor at 155mph, in case you're wondering why you can't go faster....

Thanks for the reply and suggestions as well as not worrying about hurting the engine. As for the 155mph, I haven't taken it above 110mph and that was gradual. Not yet comfortable going even close to 155mph but maybe somewhere close as soon when spring comes back.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions as well as not to worry about harming the engine. Definitely will change the oil as I do faithfully to my Altima which has 155K miles from doing such.

The fastest I taken it is 110mph and that was gradual. Not yet comfortable taking it that high (155mph) but maybe somewhere close doing a time nobody is on the road and probably when the warm weather returns so not to potentially hit some ice.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek, but the information is accurate. You can find more than one Youtube video showing the speedo bouncing off 155 while the tach is still well shy of redline.

The G has a rev limiter so you won't have an issue with destroying the engine if you accidentally hit it. DS mode does pretty well when running sharp-curvy roads but it seems to get lost on longer sweeping and rolling curves where you may need to feather or adjust the throttle. I've had mine get lost for a second or two between gears....in those cases I simply use the paddles and manually put it in the gear I want.

Yes, there's both a rev limiter and a speed limiter. There's some argument about whether the speed limiter is @155 or @157.

Or in the 140's for automagics. I've only been in the 138 range myself, thus, I've never hit the governor.

You know I am not a balloon foot, but I've never crested 130. Maybe I'll have to test these numbers!
