Hello,

I have searched and searched and I still can't find a relieving solution to my problem. I bought a 2001 QX4 last month and it has continuously made a rattle noise that only lasts for a 1-3 seconds on a Cold Startup (first thing in the morning or after sitting for a while). Google searches have found that this is a TSB and known issue on later model Nissan cars; the cause being failing Timing Chain components (hydraulic lifters, timing chain and timing chain tensioners, etc...) The cause is a result of poor oil pressure which builds up after the 1-3 seconds and tightens the bet. During that initial start, the chain rattles around causing "excessive wear" with the potential for serious engine damage if left untreated: http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/20 ... -start-up/

I can't be the only person experiencing this... It seems so common according to my web searches. Thoughts?

My Dad also owns a 2001 QX4 with more miles (146k) and does not have this issue. I continuously hear that this is "normal" with Nissan vehicles. I cringe when I hear it in the morning. Going to try another oil change (last change was 1600 miles ago) with a better quality filter tomorrow

it'll also be good to check all heat shields under the car, unless your 100% sure its timing chain related

BUMP...

Still surprised that anyone else hasn't had this issue. I was hoping a few more oil changes would have helped, but it is still there. :tisk:

It doesn't happen every time on cold starts. Also, so some mentions of timing tensioners and worn timing chain guides. Might investigate this, but it seems like a big job to fix it right
