So last night my computer decided to turn off by itself and won't turn back on. Then I smelled something burning from the inside of it. What could be wrong with it?

Any lights turn on? If not lights then it's probably the power supply

No lights. How much will it cost to fix it?

Depends on what kinda of power supply you need. Like anything you can go cheap or expensive. try a website like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com usually good for computer parts.

Just make sure to match or exceed the wattage rating of your original power supply.I'd also make sure to get one with a master power switch, simply as a convenience feature.

BTW does anyone know how many watts does a power supply for a Sony Vaio desktop have? I can't seem to find out exactly.

dude. dump the Vaio and buy a Hewlett Packard, or IBM. (I say IBM because I've had this one for 9 years and it's still going strong. if you cant get an IBM, then get an alienware.) speaking from experience, the Sony Vaio is an overhyped piece of work that's not worth the lighter fluid it takes to set on fire, if it doesnt combust on its own.

Well I had the Vaio for 5-6 years and it's been good to me. I didn't really have any problems til now. So I need this until graduation when I'll get my laptop.

He posted up some good links. I would go with any of the three, especially if it was only for a year.

Well I bought 2 different power supplies this past week and they don't work. I figured out that they were both missing a wire that was to connect to the power button and I have to order the PS directly from Sony. It sucks because it's around 300 and only has 295 watts. So I'm getting a new cheap desktop in the future until I get that laptop in May.

This is the connector I was talking about under the motherboard(?) connector. This is the plug on the OEM power supply that connects to it. The other power supplies I bought didn't have it.

The three pin plug is for the System Fan Connector. There shouldn't be any other three pin plug.

The CPU fan should be a four pin plug.

Really? The two psu I bought didn't have them and didn't start up either with the other connectors plugged in.

i have like 4 or 5 3 pins, but like i said all for fan attachments not psu related.
Cold_Zero wrote:The CPU fan should be a four pin plug.
yeah i also have two 4 pins but the cpu fan i had for a duo only had a 3 pin connector and plus i ditched it for a liquid system and the rad fan took that spot with another 3 pin. im pretty sure the 4 pin connecter will always work with a 3 pin plug, but anyway my psu doesnt have any three connector pin so i dont see why your comp wont start unless it has one.

Bios.noboot.nosignal.psfan

looks like its a connection for the power supply fan speed.Comes on higher end PS. This is the cheapest one I could find.http://www.newegg.com/Product/...71001

^wowww ur dumb.^^ weird ****. i hate when companies try to force customers into buying their ****. if it was truely a greater product they shouldnt force useless plugs to be used for the comp to even turn on. makes me mad lol

its possible that if you want another Power supply that you could purchase another fan with the three pin and plug it into the slot...it might work.
