I have a linksys WRT54G that I am having trouble connecting to the internet. I've already tried MAC cloning, and releasing and renewing the IP address. I've restarted my computer, reset the router and reset the modem. I've followed several guides that I've found in searching, but nothing seems to work. My ISP is Time Warner. Any advice and help on connecting it to the internet would be appreciated.

Is your ISP down? Are your computers being assigned IP addresses correctly?

Could be a registry error. Try System Restore to a couple days back. Happened twice on both my laptops.

ISP is not down, IP addresses are being assigned correctly.

I just got this netbook today. I've been trying to figure this out for hours. It's the Acer described here great-deal-on-a-netbook-t490703.html

I have the same router. I have run into problems, where the wireless just craps out on me. When it happens, I cannot browse the internet over a wireless connection; however, the internet still works with an ethernet cable connected. I really don't know what's causing the wireless to crash like that. Maybe interference or something. Also make sure your computer is trying to connect to your wireless network. On some occasions when the wireless would disconnect on me, instead of reconnecting to my network, it would try another wireless network that is saved in my profiles. One time it took me forever to figure out that my computer was connecting to my neighbors network with a very low signal...

The computer is definitely connecting to the wireless, checked that. Shouldn't be any interference either, I'm in my dining room right next to the router. Nothing electronic is near it. Ironically, the only wireless that works is my neighbor's. :) At this point I'm tired of the crap it's giving me, and until I can think of anything else, I say screw it. I might go buy a Belkin.

I've had this problem several times, i usually end up just resetting everything like 10 times and it'll work.

Couple ways to do a system restore.

1) Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Wouldn't recommend that as it's not in Safe Mode. I always get to safe mode by shutting off the comp via power button, then re-booting. At one point, it'll ask you which mode you want to start in, Normally will be highlighted. Go up to Safe mode and hit enter. Once it boots up, follow above path to get to SR. Would recommend backing up recent files just in case.

Can you access the router's GUI?I've had linksys's where stuff like that happened. You can update it's firmware, change settings, and open/close ports. 193.0.0.1-4 is usually the address, password is administrator or admin as default. Look around in there for a bit and see what you find.

Did you get a CD with the router?
Try popping that baby in and having it find the connection automatically.

Do you have a desktop hardwired to the router? Does that work?

Also, is the router a new router or a old one?

I'll try looking through the GUI. The router is a few years old, and I've lost the CD, so that is a no go. And I don't own a desktop, but I had my netbook hardwired to the router and it still won't connect to the internet. I'm thinking the router is just old and on it's last leg now, as I connected directly through the modem and had internet access. Looks like I'll probably be buying a new router....

And thanks for all the help guys, it's much appreciated.

I had an old D-Link and all of a sudden the wireless signal was unable to connect to anything. I tried and tried and gave up. Slickdeals.net / woot.com / Newegg.com

The WRT54G is notorious for its short lifespan. It may well have just died.

Maybe it's worth something to sell it. Depending on which version of the WRT54G you have, it is well known for being compatible with 3rd party firmware. I flashed mine with DD-WRT. Doubt it made any difference, but I like the new options in the router GUI.
