Well got back from the desert and decided to run this thing on DSL , figured id pick up some speed. but the computer hasnt gotten any faster online or anywhere else . it says it doesnt need defragin so that couldnt be it , and there is entirely too much stuff running on boot up , but for some reason when i type "msconfig" in my run menu it cant find it , coarse when i used to do that i had windows 98 now i have 2000 professional . not to mention i keep getting this "your system is running low on memeory " message when i only have windows media player open .

now i have heard your online is only as fast as what your downloading from so maybe thats the case , but the low memeory message has me concerned

anyway this thing has a 20g hard drive 1.1 processor and my 486 at work is just as fast , i think something is wrong here .

i did finnaly break down and swap out my sound card its nice to have noise come out of all speakers , and these optical mice rule !!!no more fricking ball and track to clean up .coarse my dumbass bought one of them eithernet cards and put it in only to reaize it had one from the factory ...DOH

Does nissan make computers yet ? i could use a VQ chip or maybe a DET processor .......DELL GTiR!!!!

ok win2k doesnt have msconfig (as u found out).... hard drive space dosnt matter.. how much ram u running? on 2k u should have atleast 128meg 256 would be good and 512 is best.. best way to get your computer running like new.. reformat and reinstall.. i have XP pro if u would like it.. its the same if not better then 2k (just as stable) if your over in tampa and need help with this i can make a run over if i get some gas $.. (and yes i know what im doing ive built over 5 computers and going to college for pc repair right now) defrag might help some.. but really it doesnt do much.. DSL is ok but it depends how far u are from the node (the main place the sends out the data) farther u are from it the slower it gets go to http://www.dslreports.com and go to the tools area there is a speed check.. also if u have kazaa or something like that running (it has alot of spy wear wich will also slow down your computer) get this program http://download.com.com/3000-2...t-0-1 and there are others but its 2:30 am and im drunk.. so if u need help on something email me at [email protected] also if u need any programs just let me know.. alright thats all im out

hmm it says here i got 129,040 kb RAM and something about a x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 10

im thinking seriously about getting that 512 now that you mention it , think they make it for a dell 8100 ?had huge problems finding a sound card for it cuz its so damn thin , then i found out it has horizontal ports too DO'H

not back in tampa yet , i am in fairbanks alaska so the dsl distance thing your talking about makes tons of sense

thanks for the ideas

stoneage_turbo: no.1 your internet connection has nothing to do with how fast your computer is......no. 2 hdd space has a big impact on performance..... no.3 with that laptop you need SDRAM...........no.4 your 486 is nothing compared to a 1.1 p3 Tualatin in terms of memory bandwidth and cpu power because that 486 is most likely using 60ns EDO ram while your laptop is using 8ns(or in the area)?? SDRAM

haha its all good m8... if its a desktop its easyer to work with..

>>no. 2 hdd space has a big impact on performanceno, not really i run with a good half meg on my OS drive still runs fine.. as long as u have nuf' space to run the os u will be fine (about 500megs..)

Ram is what will speed your computer up.. also.. MS is such a good builder of OS's u should reformat and reinstall every 6 months or so (depending on how much u use your computer and what for). i do it about every 2 months cuz it just gets all F*cked up after awhile (tho this is just for me most ppl dont do it cuz its a pain in the ***..) but anyways.. RAM RAM RAM.. more ram will solve your problem.. u probily have PC133 or somthing.. ill look it up.. wont be hard to fix..

if im wrong on this.. go ahead tell me what im wrong about ; )

My computer is also very slow...:(

It's a 700 Mhz Celeron (ok dont laugh guys, I know all about that being only like a 500Mhz Pentium).

And I have 353 Megs of RAm ( recent upgrade).I have win ME.

I am trying to play games that only ask for 200 Mhz required and 350 Mhz recommnended and asking for 64 Megs required and 128 recommended.

And they Are SSSLLLOOOOOOWWWWW.....:(

I defraged my HD, and also fixed some general errors on the HD (otehr than defrag), it's still SLOOOOWWWW .

I reduced the # of shortcuts on my desktop as well as files on desktop, still slow.

I erased all my cookies stil SLOOOWW.

Also the Game ("Arcanum" in this case) claims not to see my directX compatible sound card. All my other games do and I play DirectX games all the time (Fallout Tactics). As a result Arcanum is running in "safe mode" and is so slow it's making the game alsmost unplayable.

Also I get weird messaged on start-up lately.

"a win file is missing"

I am loath to reinstall my operating program as I have a lot of nce graphics... on my HD that I dpnt wanna lose.

I may just buy a new puter just for gaming and keep this one as a INET puter only..:(

Fred...:)

your available hdd space has a big impact on performance but the OS will still run fine...... and about your games running slow, do you have an integrated vid card or is it agp or pci?? if it's pci it tends to be very slow since it doesn't have a direct connect to the cpu, pci cards have to go through the I/O bus and it slows it down considerably.....instead of getting 2 sticks of ram get one larger stick because with 2 it takes longer to access the ram

BTW: i'm running an Athlon XP 1800+ at 1765mhz (195 fsb), Corsair XMS3200 DDR (256mb),maxtor D740X 40gb ata133 7200rpm hdd,gf4 ti4200 (Leadtek), and i have a KX7-333 from Abit (non-vmodded :( ) also, if you have integrated video it takes away from you system ram and it can slow it down but you can change the amount of ram it uses in the BIOS

palmerwmd your main problem is windows ME.. its the worst OS MS has ever made (IMO).. i think you should install win 2k or win XP pro.. if u need them email me.. [email protected]

Stoneage_Turbo um yes i think you could.. you would have to check and see if your motherboard will read 1gig of ram.. there really isnt a need for 1 gig of ram just go with 2 sticks of 256 meg. or one stick of 512 u wont ever need more ram then that :)

after 2 trips to a local comptuer joint im running 512 for memory , the little hot rod is back in busniess and running a little quicker

as for the old 128 they said that it was only running 90 on there test bench but it was getting beatter with every test and was up to a whopping 95 when i left so i guess that was why i was slowing down .

anyway thanks master and other dude , looks like its running just fine now
