I thing I remember someone (Q45tech????) talking about a shop computer program that could pinpoint or locate the source or type of vibration??

cut down on the quessing.....

Everything that rotates has a vibration useless perfectly balance in all planes.

One needs to measure the exact frequency and multiple frequencies of the vibration then correlate that with diameter and rpm to find likely suspects.

I believe Bosch has purchased the manufacture.I use a vibration level meter [without frequency] then modify it and same frequency and feed into a laptop running spectrum analyser software.

Rather than pay $2,000- $15,000 for a standalpne instrument.

This is exact model I use below VITEC 638:http://cgi.ebay.com/VITEC-638-...0.m14

Here is a $450 device that does both in one package level and frequency.http://cgi.ebay.com/PRO-Digita...0.m14

The problem with a simple peak amplitude and then reading frequency is you don't see the other frequencies lower than the strongest.......thus the reason I use a spectrum analysis program....................use sound card inside laptop as the A to D processor.

Once you KNOW the frquency spectrum and decide which one, ones are the problem then you refer to a graph based on gearing, tire diameter, driveshaft diameter VS vehicle speed, engine speed, etc.

REMEMBER vibrations are just sounds below the ability of human ear to resolve.Snakes sense infrasound through their bellies as do Japanese engineers they have a special word for belly vibration in a car seat.Hara is stomach< Jumon is mantra an energetic vibration or sound

As to free spectrum analyser software there is lots available:http://www.giveawayoftheday.co...eware/

Careful about the software as you are trying to resolve a 10Hz to 30 Hz region not the typical 30Hz > 20KHz that music would involve.

Most of these are lacking at low frequency but so are most laptop sound cards [IC].

I use DL4YHF's Spectrum Lab http://freenet-homepage.de/dl4yhf/spectra1.html

Spend some time studying vibrations and SA before you attempt to actually measure and guess at the component.

Experienced engineers can just feel the frequency of vibration thru finger tips and decide the problem before the technican can unpack the test equipment..

I charge $200 to identify multiple vibrations most expert performance dealers charge 2 hours. If they have test equip and some one to use it.

That's how I do it too - I think Tech stole this idea from me.

Alanta is a 3 day HARD drive....hummmm

Is there a shop machine that I could ask a shop if they use?Like how NISMO uses CONSULTIIor like a hunter road force...

Is there a test decive that shops use?Not sure that I want to get into the 'vibration' business

Or does anyone know someonje in Norther Cal??

Q45tech, needless to say, thank you

I showed you how to buy on ebay the basic equipment for less than the typical hourly charge at a dealer with free software.

No wonder the Chinese are beating our collective asses.

Back in 2000-2003 I consulted with 2 Chinese test equipment firms to design quasi rugged low cost handheld meters [rf spectrum analysers] for US cable tv industry. Other things to test cable modems and leakage.

Cheap pretty accurate test equipment has changed the world.

I remember paying $44,000 x 4 back in mid 80's for equipment to do a job That $5,000 can do today.

While we are at it, consider the need for ultrasonic leak and wear noise detection on engines, pumps, bearings, etc.

Everything in industry is tested for an ultrasonic signature and it wear rates recorded and analysed:http://www.superiorsignal.com/usndacr.pdf

I have one of these:http://www.ansonics.com/packages/packages.htmlfor locating window trim, windshield leakshttp://www.ansonics.com/overvi...#leak

"Ultrasonic detectors are really very simple. They hear ultrasonic noises in the 35,000 to 45,000 cycles per second region. The unit is built to hear that specific range. Calibrating beyond this range is, in our opinion, a waste of money"

Here is a winner ~~$30http://cgi.ebay.com/Ultrasonic...0.m14

Suppose you need to measure the thickness of aluminum cylinder block [to bore it out, etc] to 0.001" accuracy to water jacket. Anything metal where you cannot use a micrometer to get inside.Thickness of installed window or windshield glass in a frame.

Sometimes I forget I'm not dealing with 128+ IQ Masters Degree Students so if any one needs it simpler I can probably oblige.

It is just amazing how with the proper [used obsolete] test equipment one can get their hands around so many complex problems and solve them cheaply.

I know many people with Master's Degrees who have a low IQ and many people with a high IQ that work well below their capabilities (I, for one).

I don't think the two go hand in hand in understanding your posts, as a complete understanding relies on education and very little on IQ.

I was just kidding in that the average PhD in Science [college professor] has a ~ 130 IQ.Most of it is painful perseverance and lost sleep.............which I try to ease by giving lots of links to tutorials and cheap ebay prices.

I learned long ago to skip the calculus and advance math.

P-Jack- You really blew it by quoting Qt*ch's last post. Obviously you missed the post where he said he would sue anyone who quoted his words. I've been afraid to even mention his name at home for fear that the army of lawyers he has on retainer have bugged my home and will come after me. I don't need trouble so I even shredded the CD that Brian sent me with all his (Qt*ch) posts going back to the Yahoo days.

So that it doesn't happen again here's the cut and paste from you-know-who's signature:

Copyright 2009. Nipuspan International Corporation. All rights reserved. This material may not be broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

I believe you're guilty of rewriting his words and can expect a knock at your door any day now. It should look something like the Verison commercials except the crowd will all be lawyers.

Start hiding your assets. He's going to take you for every penny you're worth. I wish he, or one of the mods, would clean up his signature and remove the threat so we don't have to post in fear.

My has this squeak when I go over bumps on the road. I narrowed it down to the rear sunshade as it only makes noise with the shade retracted. I have yet to pull it out to check and fix this problem. Any comments or suggestions? And with those measuring devices, how about the Steelman Chassis Ear as it has multiple sensors?
