Car: the car

Post

1991 Nissan 240 SX FastbackWhenever I am in third gear and hit the 4200 RPM mark the power is taken out of my engine. Fourth gear does the same thing but I haven't looked at the exact RPM. And fifth gear does it at around 85 mph. I can't go any faster because of this. If I have the gas pedal floored and I hit 85 mph in fifth the power is taken away. When this happens I can push the petal but the car won't accelerate. Some of my friends said that it was my computer chip. What do yall think the problem is and how do I fix it? Have any of you had this problem before? Thanks for your time.

I am fairly certain that the car has a speed governor and a rev limiter. It is possible that your sensors in 3rd, 4th, and 5th are toast, start there. Usually the speed governor hits at about 115mph and I'm not sure what the rev limiter would be, but I know it's much higher than 4200.

just so you know, there really is no 'chip', it's an ECU. It could be an ECu problem, but not likely.

My 1990 had similar symptoms. At 3300 RPM's the engine would instantly act as though I pushed the clutch in; however, the speedometer and tachometer would fall gradually as though I were coasting.

I have done a significant amount of work recently...but I am pretty sure that this problem was cured when I cleaned the electrical connectors on the wiring harness - specifically the coolant temperature sensor. Most of these conncetors were significantly corroded.
