I started to build a new computer yesterday and have run into some questions that hopefully you guys can help me with. This is also my first computer build, so sorry for any newb questions

I'm using an ASUS P5Q pro mobo, 8800GT VGA, INTEL 3.0 ghz cpu, and 2G ram in an Antec 900 case and an Antec NeoPower 650. Everything is installed except the OS, but have been unable to get any audio for the beeps at startup so far.

When I turn it on, I can either go into BIOS or it will show a black screen saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". In BIOS, I have the boot priority set as the cd drive first, then the hard drive second. Does this seem right?

Also, neither the HD or cd drive came with any cables. Are all the cables they need included with the mobo and power source? I cant seem to find an audio cable for the cd drive and the HD has an unused 8pin connection.

Thanks for any help!

A lot of times, you can buy a product (HDD, DVD-ROM, ect) as an "OEM" and is typically 5-10 bucks cheaper than "Retail". They're the exact same product only the OEM does not come with cables, screws, ect... The retail, however, will come with all cables, mouting hardware, ect... and thus why the price is higher.

They are both OEM. I'll try and find a computer store tomorrow. Thanks LooneyDoes anyone have any suggestions for the BIOS?

What about the BIOS? Are you wanting to overclock it? If so, you have a lot to learn...

At what point do you get that message. So your able to get into the BIOS SETUP.

So, i will assume it only does that after it goes into boot sequence with bios. So if the message shows up after that then its only because you do not have a operating system installed.

UNLESS, of course they are connected, and your trying to install the OS with the disc in the CD-DRIVE. Which is what it looks like your trying to do. Make sure the MASTER and SLAVE pins are correctly in place. You will see these near the port of for the motherboard cable. Make sure they are either all on CS or master for the main drive you want (hard drive) and slave your secondary drive.

If you have this done, verify that the cd-rom drive works. It should load whats on the cd with the hard drive. Do this, if it doesn't something is wrong. Swap the cables to see if maybe you have a bad cable. '

Good job on setting the bios to read the cd-rom first.

Thanks for the replies. Im not exctly sure what I did, but it works now haha. There are still a few bugs, like the sound skips when I start a game, but I think I might just need to update the driver. A couple times when I started it, it just wouldn't work unless I put it into safe mode and then restarted it. It will also do the same thing if I leave a disc in the cd-drive and start it.

Check your SATA connections. It sounds like your optical drive is set as the Primary, and not the HD.

Make sure that the HD is plugged into the lowest number SATA connection, either "0" or "1". Plug the optical into "1" or "2".
