I drove my friends S14 with S14 SR, and he is using the stock BOV, but its not located on the SMIC like I thought it was supposed to be, but instead its over by his battery/fusebox. It was dark so I couldn't get a good look at how it was connected or anything, but I believe there is a problem with it somewhere.

When you let off the throttle between shifts, I hear a "chhh, chhh, chhh" sound. It does it 3 or 4 times, and I think its compressor surge from what I've heard of the description. When I rev it from under the hood, the noise appears to come from the air filter area. He said that he's running the BOV reciculated, I'm just not sure if hes correct or not since I couldn't see it.

Is what I'm describing possibly compressor surge, and assuming he has everything connected properly, what could be causing it. Bad BOV? I want to make sure that it could possibly be compressor surge, before I go busting his bubble about the "cool sound" as I hate picking peoples cars/work apart, and I've done it enough with this friend.

If the sound you are describing is the sound that I think it is, it is normal. My car does it too.
