Compression testing on non running engine?

I'm gonna be looking at an SR, because it's really cheap for the deal, and it's still on the shipping crate from the company this guy bought it from. But I still want to do a compression test on it before I fork over any money. Is it possible to do a compression test without the engine being hooked up? If it's been covered sorry I tried searching, and found Hitmans post, but it doesn't really cover this.
