Tried to do a compression test the other day.

Warmed up the car to normal operating temperatureRemoved all spark plugsReleased fuel pressure and removed fuel pump fuse

Something I forgot?

I did #1 cylinder first, and when I crank the engine, the needle on the gauge just fluctuates, I thought it was supposed to give a nominal reading and then you release the pressure? I crank the engine and it hits 150-180psi and when I stop cranking, it goes back to zero. I tried #2 cylinder and it did the same thing. Is it possible that when I stop cranking, there is a valve open? I put a little bit of oil down the #1 cylinder and from what I could make out, the reading was 180-210?

So obviously I didnt know what the hell I was doing, so I didnt check the other cylinders.

Oh yeah, when I removed the compression tester hose, there was a spark plug washer/gasket threaded onto it, which came from the engine, and since I just replaced my spark plugs and checked that it didnt come from one of the new ones, it must have been left there or fell down there so I removed it thinking maybe that was causing the leak and still no dice.

The gauge will go back down to zero when you're not cranking, cuz there's no compression going on.

You're supposed to record the highest stable reading while the engine is cranked. It may take 4-5 cranks per cylinder before the reading stabilizes. Between 150-180 is within the factory tolerance.

depending on the design of the tester, most of them should hold the pressure until you release it.

Yeah, I've never seen on that doesn't (not that I've seen many). Is there a pressure release button? If so then it's probably stuck open. Not that it would help the tool, but in your procedure you didn't mention holding the TB open, which will let the engine breath right for the test.

yes, it does have a valve to release pressure and a little tool to actuate the valve.

I will try another test with the TB open, thanks for the info!

sounds to me like your compression tester has a small leak. check your hose on it and make sure its tight at the gauge
