Today I tested the compression in my KA24E and I was extremely surprised by the results.

1. 118 psi2. 121 psi3. 120 psi4. 121 psi

Adding oil helped to raise them to around the 140 psi range, which is still below the minimum for my engine. It is also getting harder to start, which is never good.

So this is my rant about it. Guess a rebuild is coming up soon.

not to insult your intelligence or anything, but did you hold the throttle wide open while cranking?

U12: Yeah, throttle was wide open, coil was unplugged, injector fuse and all the plugs were out, engine was warm. So yeah I don't think I screwed it up.

Devious: What's your email address? I need to get a hold of you.

about 650 miles ago I had a crate engine installed in my '93 and the compression is 165,160,155,155. I followed all the correct steps and all so I called the importer HKS? and they told me their engines are built with lower compression since the gasoline now is lower quality and inconsistant in different parts of the country than it was in '93. I'm not sure what the compression pistones are inside but 93 typically comes with 9.5:1 from what i hear but now they're like 8.6 maybe. Maybe i should have rebuilt it myself... it runs great thoug but cant help but think how well it would run with 190psi on all 4 !!

Looks like they set your engine up for a turbo application. Bad gas now days is a very poor excuse. New Toyota motors run over 11:1 ratio on 91.

That could be, when building a turbo engine application, do you choose lower comp pistons? If so it might work out for the best since thats the next thing i am considering.

I tested my compression recently and had a hard time reading the gauge. I had TB at WOT, plugs out, engine warm and the needle bounced like crazy! The gauge is not holding pressure as the piston drops back down the bore.

Best I could tell was the needle was getting close to 12 atm (easier to see that scale vs the hyper needle) but I can't tell the difference between cylinders that way.

Could I have a broken gauge? I bought the compression kit a while ago, so if it's broken I'll just have to buy a new one.

Engine seems fine otherwise.

Thanks,

Rich D.
