So here is the deal. I have been having probs with comp for a while now. For the longest time, here were my numbers:85,83,85, 84Now that I have got cam timing to what I am told is correct, Cyl 1 is just over 60. This engine is a rebuild w/o a hone, checked w/ comp at FCT. The head has been lowered .009" + 3 Angle job. Do I need to pop the head off, or will this fix itself when the rings set? Please don't tell me just what I want to hear, but the truth.

how many miles you got on the motor?

And is it broken in?

The motor had 244K before the re-ring. But I have never driven it since. It has effectively no miles on the ri-ring. I am starting to get worried because I cannot find a set of rings small enough to work for a hone. And I do not know if I can use stock rings after honing.

i would try to break her in and cross fingers. really you have nothing to lose by doing that. the key is that its low all across. this shows that either something was done wrong with rering on all four or some other problem that is universal on your motor. not seeing your cam timing i would still be suspect of that.

Those numbers were with a retarded exhaust cam. When I place the cams correctly, I get just over 60lbs. I don't know that this is high enough to start it, is it? Will the rings ever seat without having the walls honed? I am just about ready to take it all back apart right now. Also, can I use the stock rings after honing? I cannot find a set with a small oversize.

if you just hone a little tiny bit its ok. if you go nuts then you cant use any rings. the idea is that honing is not boring because boring means machine shop.

Right, I just want to put a rough surface on the walls.

bingo. i eyeball motors before i bother to hone. if the surface is good i wont hone it. the reason is that i rarely have a torque plate. in fact the only torque plate i have is for my sr20. honing without a torque plate is substandard. so if the hone still looks factory fresh i will leave it alone rather than freshen it up to a worse condition than it was in.
