pull all your plug wires, screw the tester into a cylinder of your choice, crank the engine until the gauge's needle jumps four times, then record that numbler. Make sure you are wot. repeat procedure for each cylinder.

Aren't you supposed to pull the fuse for the fuel pump too and turn it over to get all the fuel out? I believe so...

and give the battery a charge after every other or better yet every cylinder test.

What you're really supposed to do is this:

1. Warm up engine

2. Turn ignition off

3. Release fuel pressure (remove fuse for fuel pump, start engine, after engine stalls crank 2-3 times to ensure all fuel pressure is released, turn ignition off and reconnect fuse for fuel pump)

4. remove all spark plugs

5. disconnect distributor center cable

6. attach compression tester

7. depress accelerator pedal (to keep throttle open)

8. crank engine and record highest.

You also need to ensure that your battery is fully charged.

If you get low compression on a cylinder add some oil, if this helps compression you probably have worn/bad piston rings.

If compression stays low after adding oil you probably have a problem with a valve sticking.

If 2 cylinders next to each other have low compression it is most likely a bad head gasket.

Hope this helps.

or you could pay about $35 and have a shop do it professionally!

It's really not rocket science. The equipment is very cheap and the procedure is well within the capabilities of any DIY driveway mechanic.

Besides, if you follow the instructions given above, you know 100% that it was done correctly since, well...you did it!

Good description skitzo. I just wanted to add that you should ground the wire from the coil to the center of the distributor because leaving the secondary ignition circuit open will cause the coil to put out its max KV, which could lead to coil damage. What might happen is the coil will develop a "track" internally, and under load (high KV demand) will short and cause misfiring.

Or you could just disconnect the connector at the coil.

Because if you buy the gauge yourself...you can do it again as many times as you want for the cost of your initial investment. What happens if next year you are worried about your engine and want to check it out again? Pay another 35 bucks? What if a friend needs some help checking out his car because it's burning oil, tell him to go pay 35 bucks? Shoot...for 20 bucks for a compression gauge you cant loose.
