The Chevy Sonic gets a lot of praise for being a decent looking car, at least in the Yaris/Aveo/Versa class of vehicles. Why? Because it looks like a Volvo S60 (that’s been squished into the wheelbase of a bicycle). I do, however, have one major gripe.

Image

Image

The arrows are pointed at three visually annoying cut lines where the door, hood, a-pillar, and front fender attempt to meet. The designer’s original intent was for your eyes to start at the grille above the headlight and flow upward along the bulge on the hood, then up the a-pillar and over the door where it finishes in the rear.

Its impossible to look at the Sonic without noticing these awkward and misplaced gaps. Perhaps its a necessity of cost-efficient manufacturing. A Sonic in white or any color brighter than black will make this brutally apparent on the road. Manufacturing tolerances are likely to worsen the problem.

Image

The E93 BMW 3-series convertible, like most cars with folding metal convertible roofs, has the same problem.

Image

The appeal of German car design is the purposeful initiation and completion of every line, making the car look clean, purposeful, and strong.
The E93 an exception to German cleanliness, with a Sebring-like trunk lid that awkwardly eats into the rear quarter. The trunk lid line (bottom arrow) ends awkwardly in the middle of the C-pillar, visually disconnecting it from the rest of the car. Additional creases and lines on the roof facilitate the folding mechanism but meet imperfectly with the B-pillar and rear glass.

Image

For reference, here’s the 2007 Sebring convertible. The similarities are unfortunate.

Image

Infiniti did a much better job of integrating the roof. The trunk lid draws a line that directly connects with the rear quarter glass. The folding crease on the roof of above the B-pillar matches the line where the door glass meets the rear quarter. The C-pillar is perfectly matched to the height of the rear glass. Because the convertible’s rear quarter glass is larger, it looks lighter and airier than the coupe.

This is a complaint I've been making for years. Especially with hoods gaining height above beltlines like they have been, it has only gotten worse since then.

The fakeout black triangle like the door on the Sonic (and every other compact made these days) is a HUGE peeve for me. It looks terrible. I know it's supposed to continue the shape of the door glass, but it doesn't work. The fender, wheel arch, door, and window are all such a jumbled mess there's really no need for any visual trickery anyway. Just flatten it off and leave it be. Don't flat-black it, don't try to dark it out against the paint, don't try to neutralize it from the sillhouette, just paint it body color and move on.

The hood/grille line on that Sonic is another horrible line. Why doesn't the hood fill down the rest of the nose on top of the grille? It would hide the seam almost completely. Especially when you have long horizontal lines between panels with height difference, you HAVE to be careful where you run your seams.

Look at this:
Image
Look. There's a common line above the grille and headlights. "Hey!" said Nissan's designers "Let's use that for the hood seam, too." Because they were smart. Not busy, very stealthy, and it just works.

Sonic has a common line from the tops of the headlights to the upper grille, too, but Chevy's designers ignored it. Not smart.

The rear door metal moving into the window frame on the IS is another one I cannot stand.
Image
What kind of drugged monkey penned that?! Why couldn't it wrap in cleanly following the curve of the window frame? And what's with the pretend-frameless doors anyway? Either wrap the sheetmetal all the way around the window, or learn how to tie in a damn body line with some subtlety. Don't just sort of...force it on there.

The Sonic still is a better looking car than the Aveo, IMHO. Those cuts make my eyes hurt but if it's a better car than the Aveo, I will forgive them. My wife had an '07 Aveo when we met, the only thing I liked about it is the fact that it had a 100,000mi warranty and we took full advantage of it. 2 engines, 1 transmission, 1 cylinder head, and 2 oil pumps all within the first 10,000mi. We spent more time in nice rental cars than we did in our own car.

I really despise the look of most hardtop convertibles though, i'd rather have a ragtop when it comes to convertibles. The G doesn't look bad, but they still bother me.

Maybe they just make more pieces so that when a body part needs replacing, they can just replace the section instead of pulling dents, sanding, repainting, whatever, on a single piece that overs a whole side. Agreed it is a little bit unattractive, but its probly cheaper and simpler.

...Everything is wrong with a Sebring. They all just need to burn and die.

That...is exceptionally funky looking. It's like the body lines are magnetically opposed at that point.
Can't agree with you on the required hardtop seam lines though. For this purpose, function trumps form.

Right, just ignore the problem. Don't fix it; that would just be stupid.

"Don't buy one" means buying something else. What if "something else" is guilty of the same sins? Wouldn't you, as a consumer, prefer a market with as many desirable offerings as possible? What if you like everything else about the Sonic? You still have to look at that mess every day when you walk to the car in your driveway. No, I don't want to "not buy one." I want the automaker to learn how to design a damn car.
