I bought my Nissan Maxima 97 1 year ago and the alternator has failed twice. It had been reconditioned once before I bought it and they reconditioned it again. It has lasted around 4 months and this time it boiled the new battery that I had replaced due to the last failure. It is now out of the limited warranty and I don't trust them to replace or recondition it again. Can you tell me the part number for a new compatible alternator or a make and model of a car with a alternator (perhaps a more available model).I don't have a lot to spend and could use a generic alternator if I knew the part number.

I went through several alternators on a 96 Maxima. I know there are a few different types for the 96 depending on the production date of the car. The ones I had replaced were from pep boys and they had the Nissan emblem on them. All of the replacements worked intermittently and gradually killed the battery. After a few more breakdowns I went to a Nissan dealer and got a factory rebuilt which has been good for three years. It came with a one year guarantee. The service rep told me most rebuild shops don't perform a diode check when they rebuild them. I replaced the alternator on my 98 Altima with a Auto Zone lifetime rebuild a few years ago with no problems to date.
