compass question

I have 2008 nav pack. My rearview mirror does not have the compass. Can I put a rearview mirror in with a compass from another M or G and it work without an issue?

I believe the compass is fully self contained. All it requires is a 12v source. I would sell you mine, as I dislike the compass in mirror thing, but they built the Homelink buttons into it, too.
