Comparing 2008EX to 2011EX

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I just turned in my 2008 EX (3 yr. lease) for a 2011 (2 year lease). The only other cars in this category that compare to the EX is the Audi Q5 and the new BMW X3.
I checked out both and thought it was time for a different car. I really liked both, especially the Q5, but because the Q5 was in high demand and the BMW is backordered since it was so new, they were not doing any lease deals. In fact, the best I could get on either German car was 3yr. lease, $800/month with $3,000 to $4,000 down. Since there is an ample supply of EXs, I got a 2yr. lease for $599 with only 1st month payment and license. Cap cost was under invoice and got the 1st month payment reduced by $500 as an Infiniti existing customer incentive.

So what did the Q5 and X3 have over the EX: a panoramic sun roof and electric tail gate! A fully loaded Q5 was $51K, the X3 was $49K vs $44K for the EX.

My impressions of the 2011 vs 2008 EX are:
1. the new 19" wheels are the nicest I have seen on any new car and the ride is not any harsher than my 2008 with 18". In fact, the ride seems more refined, less
jumpy and the steering is more precise. It is as much fun driving the 2 lane twistys as my BMW335 conv.
2. there is a sense of more power and smoother acceleration with the 7 speed
3. love the new color Midnight Garnet
4. had no complaints about the original Nav interface and function, but the new one is even better.
- The screen background now matches the interior color
- Nav has Zagat restaurant review
- can play a DVD movie on the Nav screen (only in park with parking brake on)
- will stream audio Bluetooth from my iPhone; no need to USB cable connect

I was looking for a diesel but until the mfgs. drop one in this mid size category, I will be content with this lovely jewel for the next 2 years.

Gorgeous car! And I'm not even the biggest fan of EX styling (even though I drive one!) The 2011 Got 2 of the 3 things I wanted to see it get, the 7-speed and the blind spot monitoring in the tech package (3rd being the 3.7L engine). I think you made the right choice, as the only thing I dislike about EXs is the suspension. To me, it's very unsettled and uncomposed. Driving on rough roads and highways here in Houston, I have to constantly reel the car in to make sure it doesn't fly right out of the lane. If this is not an issue for you, then congratulations on a great choice!

Mine's Dark Currant so it looks a lot like yours, but those wheels really look striking! More pics please!

Yes, very nice.

So "Midnight Garnet" is the same color as "Dark Currant" ?

It sure looks like it.

No, my previous EX was Dark Currant, which I liked, but this color is even richer.

Last year it was a G37 convertible color only.

I've seen a few and it looks nothing like dark currant. I have dark
currant and wish I had the midnight garnet. :yesnod

I have had every model year EX, I think the 2011 is the best. I agree the 7 speed really sprints off the line, cannot wait to see how it performs after break in, with only 110 miles on the Odo, I averaging 11 mpg on the highway, certainly a sign of a new engine.

I will say this, I love the 18" wheels, but the new tires are not so great in the snow. Tire Racks customers give these tires a 6.6 on a 10.0 scale.

I am only on my 2nd tank of gas with my 2011 Journey. Living on a 350' hill commuting up and down in an urban area, I am reading 14.5mpg.
My skins are Bridgestone Turanza 245/45/19 M/S
