This is not specific to S14's but all 240's have the propensity to crap out thier front tension rods. The bushing is silicone filled and with age it cracks and the goo oozes out. It the steering feels kinda sloppy that is a good thing to check for. Shocks tend to go out at around a 100k miles or so. None of these are insurmountable, but if you find em while checking out the car you can argue the price down lower. Those are the only realy major issues I had right after I bought my Zenki three years ago.

Ps: after test driving mine, I told the salesman that I was hearing a thump in tune with the rotation of the front tyres. "I really don't like the sound of that, there might be a bad hub bearing", I said (knowing perfectly well that one of the wheels was out of balance). I managed to get $1500 knocked off of the price.

Yeah, good point. People would much rather drive around a car that looks like a 80's 300ZX as a opposed to a R33 Skyline.

I would rather drive a skyline GTR anyday over a s13. 15k just to legalize to drive it on the road is why I dont. Skylines are sexy as hell. I think my s13 is ugly thats why I have done a silvia front end convershion and plan on making it into a truck this winter with r34 tails. I figured why spend 15k when you can swap a rb26 in a s14 and build it to make 600whp and 10k redline for about the same price as buying a skyline and having it legalized. I dont like the boxey look of the s13's. The s14 kinda have a stupid rear end but with a s15 front and wide body rear with r34 tails my s14 will be pimp in my mind. I want to get my motor done first before I dump money into the body. The s13 is just kinda a winter project while I am waiting for all my motor work to be done I will be dumping it in the spring or summer once I get all the body work done and they are finished with all the internal work on my 26. Some day I will buy a r34 chassis and swap my engine back into the beast it came from.

Back to the subject at hand

I also understand that the 240SX's (in fact most 90's Nissans) have problems with their front oil seal leaking after about 150k miles (rough ballpark guess). That isn't TOO hard to change out.

There is also the famous Timing chain rattle issue (run a search, you will find hundreds of posts), but I am not sure if the timing chain rattle applies to the S14. Could someone chime in here?

Some other problems I have encountered: Power steering leak in the high pressure line.

Actually, the oil seal and the PS leak are the only major problems I have had. My S13 also idles poorly, but it's not a critical problem.

I guess I should add that I have had some front suspension problems due to a small fender bender. My sway bar bracket came off and set the bushing free and my left side strut is off camber by about a degree. I think wreck damage is outside the scope of your question, but that may be something to look for in a used 240SX.

From memory for 95-96s

1-tension rod bushings will eventually leak, faster is you drive hard into turns

2-blower motor resistor tends to go out so you only have 4 highest setting on hvac.(also light bulbs in hvac controls tend to blow or blown already)

3-power window motor tends to die at times, whinning noise

4-knock sensor at times goes bad, and its a pita to change as it located under the intake manifold on the side of the block.

I bought my 95 SE in 99 and it had around 67,000 miles on it. It now has 157,000 miles on it and to this day the only thing I have had to replace is the water pump, suspension (struts, got full coilovers now) and the tension rod bushings. The car is awesome and I highly reccommend it as long as you get one that was cared for and not beat the **** out of!

Agreed. They are amazing cars, all of the performance of the S13, but much more comfortable and stylish. (IN MY OPINION )

and YES the S14s do have the timing chain guide rattle! I just took mine out.
