VG is the way to go with this. It's not as exciting as other swaps, but then again it costs much less money. And blood. And frustration. And being the most common, it is the most explored and thus has the most info out there on it. Racinjitter has put a lot of info up on the RB swap , but even he would recommend the turbo VG over the RB.
If you don't want to put in the VG30ET, you could put in a VG33. It has a bit more displacement which can never hurt. It can also supposedly be bored out to 3.8L before sidewall thickness would become an issue, but until I see a running 3.8L version I would be skeptical.
The stock T3 (T25 if it's pulled off of an 88-89T) isn't going to be good for 12s. The most common upgrade is the T3/T4 hybrid. The most common intercooler is the Spearco and, guess what? No piping kits will work so custom intercooler piping. There aren't any good chips out there for the Z31, so you can get the stock ECU rechipped with Nistune or get a standalone. Then bigger injectors and a decent tune.
By this time you will have noticed that the rest of the car isn't up to par to the power you will be making, so you would then want to upgrade the suspension. Which is an entirely different thread.
