Just like the title says, the cometic is a complete pile. Nothing more than a Greddy copy. I have learned my lesson with this peice of garbage. I have had my engine built for approx. 5 months and bam this thing lets go. I thought it might have been due to the head studs needed to be retorqued again but ....NO!! I hope anyone who is building a narly SR like i did and has one of these gaskets , DONT PUT THAT THING IN!! I finally came off the wallet and bought a real gasket worthy of a powerful engine. I should have done this from the beginning but like most everybody else money gets kinda tight towards the end. The gasket i chose to get my car 100% again is an APEXI 1.1 mm .020 over bore. If anyone doubts the care i took in assembling of this powerplant ...(dont). I took every possible step to make this a perfect build down to building it in a dust free environment.. COMETIC IS PURE COPYCAT GARBAGE (END OF DISCUSSION)

I will keep that in mind I have had one in my room for the last year for my forged build.

I have heard nothing but good about their KA headgaskets. They have held over 500HP reliably with head studs. It seems that there have been numerous horror stories with just about every SR headgasket but the Apexi.

I had a Cometic MLS headgasket on my KA-T before it blew (NOT a headgasket issue), pushing 20 psi with the stock headbolts at stock torque. Never once blew or burned coolant. I'm a big fan of Cometic and plan to use their gasket on my next engine as well.

good news my new head gasket just got here about an hour or so ago.I must say, big difference in quality between the cometic and the apexi (without question). I will prob do some work on it a little bit later, right now its too freaking hot outside and i have company.. i let everyone know how it goes. should be fine...

I have been using the cometic MLS and HP headgaskets on countless engines that I've built. Never once have a problem! I usually copper spray both sides prior to installation 3 times and let it sit for 20 minutes to get tacky. On all the engines that I used cometic gaskets, I usually upgrade to ARP headbolts and torque all of them to 80lbs/in in 3 increments. Retorque them after 30 minutes. Most of these gaskets me and my friends used are on 350-750 whp engines.

FYI...I've been using Cometics for YEARS.They are by far the best that money can buy, and when properly installed will hold more power than any other on the market. I have them on ALL of my race cars including my 240sx with more than 400hp of nitrous alone.

Anyone having a random issue with a cometic headgasket is having some other problem. possibly low level detonation on a turbo car, or even a bad seal when the gasket was installed (maybe not seated 100% right).

I promis that if we're running them on engines with more than 1000hp, they are far from a "Complete Pile."

well as far i can see the cometic for the SR engines is complete garbage.most other applications are seemly problem free. Just will never use another one on an SR

and my tuner who tuned my car who is very well know in the SR community agreed with me totally about the cometic head gaskets made for the SR.

best one by far is the Apexi 1.1 (again for the SR)

I'm holding a Cometic one for an SR in my hand right now, and sadly I'm going to have to agree...The quality on this one is about on par for a GReddy part. Mass produced, an a quick copy...I'll be calling Cometic later on today to discuss this problem with them since I just got in a box (25 gaskets) for the SR's. Please let me know what other problems you feel might be corrected with this gasket as they are usually very efficient at making changes to their design to bennefit shops that sell them. Right off the bat I can see that the gasket is about .05 off from ligning up on the head studs, and it the micrometer says that the .020 over is closer to .010 over...

This is definately not like their gaskets for any other motors... The Honda and Chevy gaskets that we normally order from them are never off by more than .002 on the micrometer, and are always a perfect fit on head studs or bolts.

well strictly going by memory of the visual take on the cometic gasket that i installed was no where near the quality of the Apexi metal head gsaket that i am going to be installing. Its a shame that cometic has alot of good head gaskets out there that you back with your approval and when it comes to the SR they fall way short.. when i remove it i will inspect it closely and take some pics of it and show you where the failure lies in the craftsmanship. at first glance the only place i can visual see it leaking is on the drivers side of the head, oil just seeping out. it has gotten worse the more i drove it. i thought it might had been the head studs might have needed to be retorqued but that was not the case. also the gasket was leaking compression into the cooling system under heavy boost causing air pockets in my cooling system and therefore it overheats as a result

well, the weather hasnt really been very cooperative on my behalf. it has rained every freaking day this week just around the time i get off of work. i finally had my boss give me off yesterday cause i worked the day before oon my birthday no less. I have removed the crappy COMETIC metal head gasket and have the APEXI head gasket installed and torqued. putting every thing else on this afternoon or saturday morning. if everything goes well as far as the weather is concerned , and the man upstairs allows me to finish it up i will be there in orlando on the 13th of August. (Hey Aries, wonder if you got anywhere with COMETIC when you contacted them about the problem with the SR gaskets.)

I was told that they would be looking into the problem. Though they were less than impressed when I told them that I was oging to be sending all but 1 of them back to them, and would await their corrected gaskets in the next 2 weeks, or simply buy Apex-I.

SHES ALIVE!!!! got her done saturday at about 600pm. i am very pleased with how she is doing..running very well doesnt leak at all, no oil more oil leaks, no more blowing coolant out due to the head gasket leakingin between the cylinders.. went to orlando last night and had a blast. was a bit nervous taking it out and beating on it without taking it out first and driving it around a while before taking a 100 mile trip but i figured it will either hold or it wont hold. SHE"S BACK!! Mark
