Cold weather creaking?

When i start my car in cold weather, around -5C and lower (like 15F i beleive) The rear view window creaks like crazy. It sounds like ice is breaking off the back window, and its constant until the car warms up which is like 10-15 minutes. This only occurs when its cold too, which is wierd. Ive also ruled out the possibility of it being ice on the back window that makes the noise because it happens in all types of cold weather.

Does anyone else have this problem?I think it can also sound lke cheap plastic breaking apart when i go over a bump.. Or the sound of things expanding when it gets warmer..

I've never driven a car that doesn't do this to some degree. When things get cold they contract, when they get hot they expand. Different materials expand and contract at different rates... glass, steel, aluminum, plastic, etc.

mine does that as well. but it's ice on the sunroof..and i only hear it when i drive down a bumpy road or anything that will shift the car.. happened on my old eclipse as well.. i don't see it as anything to worry about..

have to say it has stopped now that i built my garage though.. imagine that.:-)

I have a 2000 Maxima and it doesnt do this. Its completely silent when driving in cold weather..

But yeah, i figured it was different material contracting/expanding and that it wasnt thought out well. The sounds honestly make my car sound like its falling apart. This + the prior incident make me dislike the car

Cheap plastic creaks like crazy....My car has never sat outside and it sounds like it is breaking apart when it it cold out........

My GTO sat out 24/7 and never made a noise............no matter how cold it was

I bought my Sentra last year around this time. The temp went up and down everyday from freezing in the morning, to above freezing in the afternoon. The temp difference made everything in the car rattle! i couldnt stand it! The dealer couldnt get rid of any of them. I installed a strut bar a few months ago, and since then not a single rattle or sqeak!! I guess it does alot more than handling upgrades, since it tightens up the frame!
