I have a 2002 Infiniti I35 with approx 94,000 miles. I've never had any major problems with my car. Recently, when I turn my car on my RPM goes up to about 1300, but then goes down immediately to about 300-500 RPM stutters a little(acting as if it's about to turn off) and then slowly rises back up to normal. At times when I don't drive my car for a couple of days and attempt to turn my car on I have problems turning it on. I have to give it a little gas so that it wont die on me and then after the RPM settles it stays on fine. I have never had a problem while at a red light or driving. It's strictly only when I turn it on. Does anyone have an idea of what it may be? I've been told that it could be the spark plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, or maybe both the fuel filter and the fuel pump. This is driving me nuts

Well, if the car hasn't had the plugs changed in 90k miles, I would start there. It could be as simple as that. I also think it sounds like the TPS, but if it were that, it should give you problems more than just at start up.

Yeah I thought about changing the plugs first. What exactly is the TPS? If it was my plugs or my fuel pump would it not give me fault code or my check engine light come on?

Nope. No code from fuel pump or plugs.

I'd definitely start with plugs, wires, distributor...easy cheap fixes.

TPS is the Throttle Position Sensor. On the '02s it's actually a bit more than that: it's integrated into the drive by wire throttle control mechanism.

Oh ok. Alright let me start with the plugs and I guess I'll go from there. Thanks.

Well I changed out the plugs today. The old ones were definately done. However, the problems still persists. I even added a Prestone Fuel System Cleaner to see if it would change anything but it didn't. This is really weird because it only hesitates a little at start up, but afterr that everything is ok.

Where exactly is the MAF sensor? or if anyone has any ideas please help.
