Cold start rattle. Timing chain?

Hello friends, long time.

My Pathfinder has a cold start rattle. Reading about the VQ35DE, I understand this may be due to a timing chain guide or tensioner problem on other models. Mine is a loud (marbles-in-a-tin-can) rattle on cold start, not a continuous whine. Somewhere I read that this affects FWD models, though I'm not really sure how that would make a difference, as it is the same engine. I have compared the tensioner and guides for a 2002 Maxima vs. Pathfinder, and have found that the parts are mostly similar, but not identical.

Has anyone else experienced the rattle with a pre-2004 QX4 or Pathfinder? More importantly, has anyone solved the issue, and what parts did it require?

It is also entirely possible that I have piston slap as opposed to a chain issue.
