From your description, it MIGHT be that you dont have enough residual fuel pressure in the system.
Next time you go to start your car after it sat for a while, try turning the key to the on position (not start), wait a few seconds (or until the fuel pump turns off if you can hear it), turn it off, then on again, wait a few seconds, turn it off, then crank it. This will pressurize the system before you try to start it, and if it works, you have a good idea if this is the problem.
If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge set, hook it up, pressurize the system, then just let it sit and check it again later. Some leakdown is normal. There's a specified pressure and time to wait, but I dont have a manual. If that's the problem, it will probably be a leaking check valve in the fuel pump, but it could be a pressure regulator not fully seating.
