04 g35 with 50k miles. Now with cold weather when it first starts the idle drops to almost 0 rpm then recovers. Lately it fires up then stalls unless the throttle is applied. Any ideas?

hey roadmaster... its not the cold weather causing this problem, the reason this is happening is because the idle is off from where it is supposed to be which happens when the throttle body gets dirty.. the cure for this problem would be cleaning the throttle body and having your dealer do an idle/air volume relearn and this will take care of your idle/shutting off problem.hope this helps you out

You may want to replace your air filter as well, this could be a contributing culprit, if it's not relatively new, winter months can be harder on the filter element, and it's possibly robbing your car of O2.

Could also be a battery issue. Harder to start in cold weather.

4-5 years is the general life span on a battery.

I agree that the battery should be checked, but I don't think it's causing the problem. The alternator should be keeping the engine going after the intial start-up. If it's dying shortly there after, I would look into oil viscousity, intake dirt, and the idle reset.

The ECU will usually temporarily raise idle when it's cold. My normal idle is around 700. When it's cold here (40s), my cold idle will start out at 2k rpms. I can only imagine what it needs to be in freezing areas.

similar thing happens in my 00 maxima. I'll pull the throttle body (if I have time) this weekend.

Welcome to NICO

How often do you change your air filter?

Here is a photo of mine with 8k miles on it. I keep a close eye on mine and change it regularly. It is a 10 minute job. Do a search on this site for instructions.

He changed his plugs and said he hasnt had the issue since.

I literally change my sparkplugs on the little nissand na now on the G every year. It si the small stuff that causes the big stuff to go bad. small stuff like plugs, belts, fluids, battery, filters, etc, can make a big difference on how long the big stuff lasts

I use factory spark plugs all the time. Infact, I could still sell the one I replaced from my G last year---still looks great. It would appear that most or all Nissan vehicles love the NGK spark plugs, even my little nissan---i have no idea why this is so. OEM plugs, OEM differential fluid, OEM clutch fluid, OEM gear oil, all work well---never had issues with them, and so i will stick with them. Only my engine oil is different from what the car came with---I use RP. As for brakes, OEM brakes work well but they don't last at all. So, next time, i am gonna switch to hawk pads on OEM rotors and see what happens. I also swithced to Toyo Proxes T1R tires form OEM Bridgestone RE0050A---huge difference in performance.

Roadmaster, the iac is all part of the throttle chamber/throttle body on the G35. The idle relearn in a nutshell...when you get carbon build up on the throttle plate, the ecu is telling the tp sensor to keep the idle where it is supposed to be but the throttle position sensor is doing something different...the thing is you can not adjust the iac manually like the older nissan/infiniti engines, when you do an idle air volume relearn procedure, it's almost like it's putting the throttle position and ecu back in sync with each other..this is a common problem and i'm positive this will take care of your concern. hope this helps.......
