I installed my shiny new spec r s15 turbo, test drove it at shop/work. brought it home. went to leave for school the next morning. idle like balls. let it warm up a little, used to do it all the time. 2 minutes went by. left my driveway and it was running like ****. dumping fuel, pre igniting like a mother. try to drive it out. nope, wont let me boost. at all.
as soon as my temp reach NOT it ran fine. by this time i was smelling that burn plastic/rubber smell through the vents. opened my hood. looked like it started to melt everything haha. the intake coupler, o2 harness, etc, nothing major, i knew it was murdering my new turbo though. babied it to school and back to work where i parked it.
the tech/tuner suggested it was the tune, from me driving he knew something right. he offered to burn me a new chip. even though i bought one from best1tuning. i was running rich, it was breaking up/pre igniting, etc. it would boost but full throttle shift were a joke, it would bog and studder.
Joe, the tuner, took my stock eprom, copied it, looked at it. found that nissan has some brilliant stuff. VERY similar to the SR maps. the ecu can compensate for 30% larger injectors and the timing maps are good for 16psi of boost!! which is crazy because i was alway told it was only good for the stock 7psi.
im using dsm injectors, joe is a dsm specialist with multiple DSMlink chips that he's made laying around. see where im going? the fuel maps will be perfect for my CA because of the injectors. he also said that there is something in them about the coolant sensor that he thinks is missing in my best1 tune but i dont know because he doesnt want to read that chip.
some unforseen circumstances found me, my car, an empty shop, and boredom together. i decided to let my car completely warm up before i took it for a spin. the car ripped, felt nice. real nice. 0.7-0.8bar. first gear went quick, no traction. seeing full boost at 3-3500 and having to shift less than a second. i only went half throttle to take it easy and surprised the **** out of me.
this week, as soon as we get our axle straps for the dyno back, we are going to dyno it on the tune i have now and then his tune and see how they compare. im just glad my little 1.8 is still taking the abuse i dish out to it.
