Cold engine idle speed too high?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hi, I got a new 2008 EX35 Journey 1 month ago. It drives great. But I notice the engine speed jumps to 1800rpm when I start the car when it is cold. Then the idle speed decreases gradually and takes almost 1 minute to get to around 1000 rpm. After driving and engine warms up, the idle speed is about 650rpm when I brake to a stop when at gear D, and about 675rpm when I put it to P (park). I think these are normal idle speeds.

I have a Accord V6, when I start it, the engine speed jumps to 1100rpm briefly and quickly goes below 1000rpm.Why the cold ilde speed of my EX35 is so high (1800rpm)? Is it normal? What rpm you guys see when starting your EX35?Thanks for your input.H1LL

mine goes above 2100 RPM and i think its normal, but switching gears at higher RPM hurts the transmission, i let it stay warmed for 30 seconds before i start driving it.

Mine jumps up to 2k on start up but will quickly begin to idle down.

I also ALWAYS let mine idle for 30 seconds per the manual.

Mine goes to 2,200 for 5 seconds, then down to 1,800 for 5 seconds, then down to 1,500 for 5 seconds and then below 750. Engine is now warmed up.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for all your inputs. My engine cold idle speed seems deceasing at a slower pace than cjre1's. I will ask Infiniti service about it when I have my first oil change next month.H1LL

It usually takes me about the full 30 seconds for it to drop below 1,200 RPMS.

Starting with the 07 G sedan they started using some new open loop logic to heat the catalyst faster. I have seen these idle as high as almost 2500 but they steadily drop. This usually happens when the ambient and coolant temperature are very low. This actually begins the heating process quickly therefore improving overall fuel economy and decreases engine wear from excessively low temperature.

However once the shift position is changed the idle will immediately drop in a normal manner. This is an improvement over open loop idle still trying to occur when the transmission is in gear.

Very true and I forgot to add that my outside temp was 91 degrees, so I only needed 15 seconds to warm up, however, when I am in Colorado, I needed 30-60 seconds to warm up and it jumped to 2,400 RPMs for 20 seconds.
