here is mine. (18.00) filter and adapter from ebay and a 3" diameter 6" long pipe (3.00) vac fittings and 2 3" couplers. i took the stock elbow and cut it then urethaned it and clamped it to the coupler then the coupler to the pipe and pipe to the MAFS. fabed my own bracket and powder coated the metal parts. got under $35.00 into it with parts and coating. note where i put the vac lines. back where they should be. one is just plugged into the rubber coupler by the elbow and one i drilled a hole in the filter base and attatched it with a fitting.

now i found a guy on ebay who sells 3 inch pipe with a 60 degree bend manderel bent so you can just get a coupler for the throttle body and mafs adapter. a tad more money but it would be more legit.

(note mt engine cover is off for repainting)

A true cold air intake would imply the intake of "cold" air. In other words, air from outside the engine bay, or at the very least a cover/casing enclosing the filter.

These are simply warm air/ram intakes which will sound awesome, and probably even help MPG a bit (provided you don't floor it all the time to just hear it.) but performance wise, help very little.

With that said...

If you're a DIY guy, save yourself some dough, and do what these guys did. Purchase a decent conical filter (or the pop charger for a little extra $) and consider some sort of heat shield option and call it a day.

Besides (barley) shortening the length the air travels, and perhaps looking a bit cleaner, I don't see the point of messing with the "piping/duct work" unless your gonna send it outside the engine bay.

If you'd prefer a pre-built kit, K&N makes one for your 03.

I never said it was an original idea, I knew it had been done before but atleast mine did not look like dog s*** unlike yours when you finished.

don't even bother with a CAI unless you actually buy a true CAI or fab one up. at the same time, it won't matter a whole lot on our trucks. keep to a typical WAI and call it a day. unless you're making more power and have other supporting mods to make better use of a real CAI, it'll be money thrown down the drain.

i made mine to attempt to get better MPGs plus it sounds cool. i can hear the variable timming change when i floor it lol. there goes my MPGs haha. im in the works of making a aluminum box for mine along with a ducting tube to draw in cool air. i personaly think it cleans up the bay a bit too. i plan on getting a better K&N filter but screw buying the kit for 330.00usd. i can make one for under 100 including a true K&N filter. its not hard to make a box. im happy with mine and it seems to work fine.

I got the K&N and it sounds great. Coupled it with a cat back exhaust upgrade and there is a noticeable increase in power.
