i plan to remove my entire air box and replace with just a k&N filter..im going to keep the pipe running from the throttle body to the air box and the metal piece which goes into the airbox but then remove the wires and such and just slap on a K&N style cone filter..if i do this and remove the wires and plug ins will it harm performance or do anything detrimental?..thanks alot guys. any other quick mods for a lil extra power i can do..by the way its an 89 fastback 3 pedal with the SOHC

not the first time this has come up. I've never seen any real gains from this.

dont unhook wires thats you mass air flo senser. you can remove box but keep the metal part on there. you are talking k&n cone filter if so you will need a adapter like one in pic. you bolt this to right side of m.a.s.

you need the part i outlined in red. that is your m.a.s then you need the adapter that i put in last post. then bolt up the adapter to the m.a.s put small hose from air box to the small pipe on adapter i put yellow arrow to hose. then install filter. one more thing take battery cable off so your e.c.u can reset itself to your knew air fillter. good luck

i have seen them on ebay for like $20 shipped just put (nissan 240sx air intake) that seems a little pricey but if you keep your i on them you might be able to find a beter deal. or you might google it and find it cheaper. ebay kind of screws you on shipping.

i almost forgot a very inportant thing. you will wont to rig up some kind of tye down at the end were you filter will be. keeps it from just flopping around the screw on your fan shrowd should keep that part in place. but im not sure about the end were the filter will be. becouse i have a set up that replaced the hole stock intake. you dont wont it to be flopping under there vibration may harm you m.a.s . besides when you close hood you may damage fillter or m.a.s . the cone filter even when you have it secured will still be very close to the inside of your hood. be carefull the first few times you close hood make sure you have clerence.

the screw (1) should hold that part. but (2) you will have to rig, you will have a metal strip under were you stock air box was. rig up somthing to that and then to the knew part that you buy. they do sell kits to do that but you can rig with a little creativety.

heres a pic. i found on ebay. this is pretty much what you wont it to look like when its done. i know this is not your engine. i like the way the filter is some what pointing down, this keeps your hood from hitting filter & m.a.s if you dont secure the end were the filter it will pretty much just be strate across and then your setup will probly hit your hood or be daham close. good luck with the install.

well haveing fan shroud off could cause over heating. if that does happen get some altima electric fans. hope it dosent, but i have heard some guys that run without shroud & dont seem to have a problem. as far as that black thing under your hood. i think thats more for disepaiting heat from your hood. but i have seen even show cars without it so that should not be a problem hopefully. ps... man you keep wanting to take sh*t off your car maybe when you want to take stuff off. you should post it and see what guys on here know about removing sh*t or if you should leave it. better safe than sorry. thats what were all here for to help each other out.

thats pretty infomative, but it almost sounds easyer to just buy the adapter. besides were he said to connect the hose back to the setup sounds kind of like a sloppy way to do it. with the adapter it practicly dummy proff.

Yep, adapter is easier, but the write up is way cheaper!!!I did this about 4 years ago, when there was NOT an adapter for our cars (on Ebay)Before turboing my KAT I was running a cheapo PVC cold air kit that cost me 20 bucks plus 10 for a KN wannabe filter.
