I hear there are ways to get CAIs without worrying about going over puddles, and one suggestion I heard is getting a bypass valve. Does anyone know for sure if a bypass valve will work 100% of the time? And if they do, do I need a specific one for an Injen CAI for a AT 03 G35 coupe, or can I just buy a cheap one off ebay like this onehttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW

Getting enough water to actually hydrolock a motor is not easy. Considering most CAI's locate the lowest point of the intake tube opening above the center of the wheel, you'll be pretty deep before that happens. For water to get sucked up like that, you need the water to be deep enough to just about submerge the entire filter underwater. CA doesn't get torrential rains and while our drainage can't handle big downpours well, as long as you avoid bodies of water that are deep enough to get into the interior of the car, it's doubtful you will need to worry about hydrolocking.

yeah you have to like submerge it to suck up that much water...but bypass valve is good to have tho. we had a sedan come in a while back with a cai and no bypass that was hydro locked...said the front end was like a foot under water. when we pulled the drain plug about 2 quarts of water came out before oil.....then some metal shavings follwing oil. lol

Nothing wrong with extra insurance. If you must get one, you should only need one that is the same size as your intake pipe. They use a flap that opens when there is too much vacuum so during normal operation it should not allow air through it. To be safe though, install it before the MAF and at a higher level than the filter (highest point is best).

I can't say much about the ebay model. The AEM one works. AEM displayed one on a long tube attached to an NSK which they submerged the entire filter in the water. The water came up to some extent but never passed the bypass. It was however, disconcerting how high it came up the tube. Though, I think it was running a higher throttle application. I doubt most people will run such high throttle inputs while submerging their car that far into water.
