First here is a little Bio on the car1996 I30 with about 165,000

What happens when the car is cold will go to about 4000 rpm before it will shift. if i let off the gas it will shift.

and once the car is warmed up and drive for a while it is just fine. and this only happens when the car is cold.

let me knowwhat you think

thanksMikeReply With Quote

Welcome to NICO.

Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

I'm having almost the same problem. When the car is cold, it almost seems as if it doesn't want to start in 1st gear (Automatic), and will only rev to about 2500-3000 rpm. it's real sluggish until it warms up (About a min of driving), then ti's fine for the rest of the day.Have you guys figured anything out here?

i'm not sure if this is your guys specific problem,but i've heard that an issue like that might be either the valve body or a internal seal bleeding by when it cool down. my buddies 89 Z71 did that. shift real hard and firm the very first 1-2 shift and never do it again till next morning after it sat all night

How much messing around did he have with it, and did it cause any further problems?

I know this is an old post, but I've always been told that you're supposed to let the car warm up for at least a full two minutes after the car's been sitting all night. Evidently its hard on the car to start it and immediately drive because over night, the transmission fluid and oil sink to the bottom of the engine - the two minutes gives it time to warm up and fill the whole engine/transmission before driving.
